Gear Review – Tool Logic SL1

Awhile back The Road Warrior talked about how he always has a small flashlight or three on him.  I thought that was a pretty good idea, so I decided to find out what kind of multi-tools were out there with flashlights mounted on them.  Turns out there were quite a few.

I found just what I was looking for on the Camping Survival website.  The Tool Logic SL1 is an introductory kind of tool for those looking to get something like this.  I didn’t want to spend a pile of money on something I might not like.  Luckily I came across this deal.  The regular price was about $39 but was on sale for $15.  Hell yeah!

Not only does it have a small flashlight it’s also got a whistle, which can really save your bacon in an emergency situation.  The light is reasonably bright.  It’ll light up a good enough area to walk by and at night it’ll really look bright.  It also detaches from the knife and can be attached to any metal surface with a powerful magnet.  A very handy feature if you’re working on a car or quad without a hood lamp.

As you can see in the pictures below it’s got a smaller blade than my Camillus; however, it’s also quite a bit lighter.  What you can’t see in the pictures is that it’s also a little bit thicker than the blade I usually carry.  I don’t wear my pants tight, so that aspect isn’t a big deal and I like the fact that it’s a lighter knife.

I ordered it from the Camping Survival website and during the checkout was informed that it might be 7 to 10 working days before I saw it.  Oh well , that’s ok.  I’m in no big hurry.  Imagine my surprise when it landed on my doorstep three days later.

The blade came very sharp and as you can see it is also has a serrated edge, which up to now I haven’t been all that partial to.  I do think I’m starting to come around though, at least on smaller blades.  I had to cut some pretty rugged plastic ties and the serrated edge gnawed right through them.  Three days later it was on my doorstep!  Now I have light with me every where I go.  I’ve already used the light 1/2 dozen times and the knife itself at least 20 times in the week I’ve had it.

The whistle blows good and loud although for the most part I don’t even think about it being there.  I was entertaining my kids with it after I got it, but had to stop when my boy wanted to play with it with the blade out.  Uh uh.  No way.  He’s too much like me when I was a kid and would give himself a really nasty cut if he got hold of this rig.  When he gets a little older I’ll get him a good knife, but not until I’m sure he can use it responsibly.  (What do you think is a good age?)

Overall, a good knife for the price.  I wouldn’t trust the blade for heavy duty work like I would the Camillus, but for the utility you can’t beat it.  They have better knives with different configurations too.  For example you can get one with a firesteel instead of a flashlight.
