Young Kids, Tips for Winter Camping

MandD Stowe asks: “I’m interested in taking my kids (5 and 7) winter camping. I’m wondering if your fans have any tips they’ve learned about taking their kids winter camping.”

Comment #1: First, set up your gear in the back yard. Give it a test run.

Comment #2: Try camping in mild weather first. Keep it short. Bring treats. Plan on coming home early. Have access to indoors. And most importantly – eat a teaspoon of concrete because you’ll need to harden up!

Comment #3: Have lots of padding under at nght. Dont over dress at night. Put closes for the next day in sleeping bag to get them warm. Mke sure to put a blanket inside te sleeping bag with the opening opposite the zipper and folded over at the feet. This will keep cold ir from coming in on them and keep them warmer. I make up baggiesfor ech day with cookies, candies, and snacks. The kids get these after lunch and they are responsible for them. Also I did cool cooking one a day and taught them to do it. Cake in a orange peel, breakfast in a paper bag, upside down cake in a tunna can. Foil dinners, meat loaf on a stick, biscuits on a shovel, cooking in a box~ reflector oven. Things they will think is cool and let them help with food choices and prep. Even the 5 year old will think its cool stuff. When ever we took ours out, they had a chore list, such as wood gathering and dishes and helping cook. I also recommend putting tarps down outsidethe tent to help keep down dust and wer stuff in the tent. We put it under the table and to make it real big just used duct tape.

Learn to build a snow shelter or “Quenzee”

Comment #5: Bring a portable toilet that they can actually sit on. Children that young might have second thought about squatting over freezing snow.

Comment #6: Don’t over dress them. If they sweat, they’re wet. Loose fitting layers. Keep feet and heads warm and dry. Big fires. Warm drinks. Tent heater.
