FEMA Operational Briefing (October 28, 2013)

Space weather. There has been a series of 3 X-class flares that has erupted on the sun over the past 24 to 48 hours,  with an X1 occurring this morning,  all coming from Sunspot AR1875. Currently there is about 9 sunspots that face the earth. All these X-class flares have caused a series of CME to be hurled towards the earth and we are expecting the first CME to hit us sometime within the next 24 hours. Even though all these CME are weak, the combined energy will cause some problems for the earth. Remember here on earth we are protected by our geomagnetic field, however our communication and other satellites are outside the field and are vulnerable to these storms. We can expect communication disruption (to include TV, Cell and GPS) and possible some power outages if the Geomagnetic storms become too strong.  NOAA has increased its forecast to 65%chance of more M-Class flares and 35% of X-Class flares for the next 48 hours. Hurricane Raymond is still about 660 miles SW of Baja California, Mexico and has been circulating in the general area since last week. This storm is expected to turn Northeast sometime today or tomorrow but it will weaken considerably and only produce wet weather if it should make it to land.

San Antonio, TX Flooding, is still ongoing. The good news is that the rivers should be lowering to non-flood stages within the next 48 hours according to reports.
