3 Fruit Fly Traps That Work! (Video)

It’s that time of year again, fruit flies are in abundence and people are asking how can I get rid of these nasty fruit flies.

Here are a few ideas for you. There is more than one way to catch a fruit fly. ;)

First up is the Vinegar Trap.

Fortunately, fruit flies aren’t very bright. The adults spend all their time focused on two goals: mating and laying eggs on rotting fruit. They use their sense of smell to find fermenting produce, and will fly to their target with little regard for their own safety. That’s why a vinegar trap is so effective.

You’ll need to round up a few things before you start.

  • a fruit jar, glass or cup
  •
  • a plastic baggie large enough to fit over the glass
  •
  • a ring for your fruit jar or rubber band for the glass or cup.
  •
  • Knife or scissors
  •
  • apple cider vinegar
  •

Pour a small amount – an inch or so – of apple cider vinegar into the glass. The cider vinegar has a nice, fruity aroma that fruit flies simply cannot resist. Using the scissors, snip the corner off the plastic baggie. This should created a hole just large enough for fruit flies to pass through, but not so large that it will be easy for them to escape.

Place the baggie over the glass, and position the hole you’ve cut over the center. Push the snipped corner down into the glass so the baggie forms a funnel in the glass, but doesn’t touch the vinegar. Use the rubber band to secure the baggie to the glass

Place your vinegar trap in the area where you see the most fruit flies – near your garbage, produce bins, or compost container. If you have a heavy fruit fly infestation, you might want to make several vinegar traps, and place them around your kitchen and in other rooms where fruit flies are present.

You can also make a paper cone and set it in the jar like this photo.

A plastic pop bottle will also work.

Next up is the wine bottle fruit fly trap, again this is very simple to use.

Leave a little bit of red wine at the bottom of the bottle and let it sit out. The flies will flock to it, and die a very merry death. You can also put it in a separate container with plastic wrap and holes poked in the top if you wish.

This next recipe comes from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, and has been handed down and used since 1850 in New England to get rid of fruit flies. The old timers had a solution for everything, this is no exception.

Again you will need to round up a few things from the kitchen to make this next trap as well.

1 pint of milk

1/4 pound of raw sugar

2 ounces of ground pepper

Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour the mixture into shallow dishes and place these dishes around the house. For some peculiar reason, fruit flies are drawn to the mixture and will quickly suffocate/drown in it. You can try adding a drop or 2 of dish soap if they seem to be landing and flying away.

Here are a few helpful tips:

Fruit flies breed in drains. Pour a mixture of half white vinegar half boiling water down the drain daily to stop them at the source. Keep the area around the drain dry.

Of course, keep all fruit stored away and don’t leave any food of any kind sitting out.

Keep the garbage covered.

Getting rid of these little pests doesn’t have to be such a daunting task. It’s simple to make your own fruit fly traps at home, and while some of them may be gross to clean out, they sure beat using horrific chemical sprays to kill the flies.

Get rid of your fruit flies forever, PUT A STOPPER IN YOUR DRAINS!

It really is that simple, instead of making fruity lures that actually capture 3 while attracting 10 more.

This also will get rid of biting gnats. Once you plug your drains, you may have to put a fly paper up to capture the ones already in the house. Remember – without ‘damp’ or ‘water’, they cannot breed to continue on.

A ‘no-see-um’ net, hung over door thresholds and potentially open windows will further prevent entry (I like my back door open in the spring and fall, with only a screen door there. With the no-see-um netting thumb-tacked to the doorframe’s header, I can still get breeze and light, but no bugs. Simply push it out of the way for a second to enter – minimizes bug entry).
