A GREAT Plant For Making SHTF Soaps, Shampoo & EVEN Sponges

While many Preppers want to focus on Guns and tactics for surviving a long term disaster, the reality is the BIGGEST danger all of us would face in a DISASTER scenario actually comes from infections and disease.

So learning how to take plants in our environment and turn them into soaps, shampoos and sponges for maintaining our hygiene could absolutely save your life in a long term disaster scenario, where maybe that dream bug out bag list, left off a few more hygiene items than you should have planned for.

Which is why in this video, you’re going to learn how to take the common High Desert plant, Yucca and discover how to turn its root into soap for keeping your hands, armpits, feet, hair and groin area clean and bacteria free.

Even if you don’t live where this plant grows, you’ll still come away after watching this video with some great ideas.

Step #1: Locate A Yucca You Can Harvest

If you live in a desert climate, here’s a couple pictures of the plant you’re looking for.

And here’s a close up of a smaller one that this video shows you how to harvest:

Tip: Look For a Yucca Growing on a Hill

The reason you want to find one growing on a hill is because the needles of the plant are incredibly sharp; so sharp that they can actually be used as needles for sewing.  So when you find one on a hill its easier to get at the roots without being poked.

Step #2 Harvest The Root

The first step in harvesting the Yucca root is to dig down and find which direction the big thick root is growing, this one was growing sideways along the hill.

After you’ve dug down and found the root, you want to cut it out with a knife.  It’ll look like this:

Step #3: Replant The Head of your Yucca plant

The heads of the Yucca plants are a lot like Pineapples, where after you have harvested the Yucca root that you wanted for making soap, you can replant the head of the Yucca into the earth so it can regrow.

Step #4: Now Let’s turn the Yucca Root into Soap!

The cool part about this Yucca Root is that not only is it full of soap, but in this video you learn how to turn the Yucca Root into a Soap filled SHTF Louffa, so it acts like a kind of natural soap filled sponge for cleaning yourself.

And the first step for doing that is to take a freshly harvested Yucca Root that is still moist, and find a flat rock you can start to pound it on:

Before we start grinding the Yucca Root into a soapy Louffa, we first need to peel the bark off with a knife:

While you’re peeling its important to note that its pretty easy to take off too much bark as your cutting/peeling your Yucca root, so be careful to only try to take off the bark.

Once its peeled, we pound the end of the yucca root so it flares out a little like the bristles of a broom would; using a pounding rock to do so:

Continue to pound the Yucca Root until it actually starts to suds up with soap.  You can just see the Yucca root’s soap suds starting to suds up in the picture below after a few seconds of pounding on the peeled root with a rock.

Step #5: Now Use The Yucca Root Soap to Wash Our Hands!

At this point what you’re going to need to do is fill your mouth with water… but don’t drink it.  Just fill your mouth up and hold it there.

Then like a faucet, spit a little bit of water into your hands.  Some people think this is gross, but your mouth is actually fairly clean.  So unless you have someone else to pour the water into your hands for you, if you’re by yourself you will need both of your hands so go ahead and feel OK spitting a small portion of it into your hands to wet them.

Next take the peeled end of your new Yucca Root “Soap Bar” and scrub it on your wet hands.

After scrubbing for a few seconds with the Yucca Root, you’ll see soap suds start to form on your hand like this:

Scrub both hands like normal with the Yucca Root Soap, making sure to get underneath your fingernails.  Fingernails are one of the most important areas to keep clean in a longer term survival situation as food gets under their while we eat and breeds dangerous bacteria that can make us sick.

Lastly use the remaining water still in your mouth, to rinse the last bit of soap suds off your hands.  And that’s it, you’re hands are now clean!

Step #6: Use the Yucca Root Soap to Clean the Rest of your ‘Hot Spots’

Now that your hands are clean, you can use this same Louffa-like hygeine trick to clean your armpits, feet, and groin area.

But if you’ve been paying attention…

We don’t yet have a way to use this on our hair as a shampoo.

So to process this root into a shampoo, what you need to do is go back to your flat rock, and grind the Yucca Root all the way down into tiny pieces.

You then let those tiny pieces dry out in the sun on that rock until they are completely dried.

When they are completely dry, you can come back and crush them into a fine powder that you can take with you in a container as a type of dehydrated shampoo!

But wait, there’s more…

The long stocks on the Yucca plant, make an excellent hand drill for starting a fire without matches.  She says that if that’s what you’re going to look for, you want to make sure you look for a 2nd year stalk.  And make sure that its living and not a dead one, as a dead dried out stalk will splinter your hands if you try to use it as a han drill.

All in all, the Yucca plant is an incredibly useful plant to start to learn how to use for surviving in High Desert Climates.
