LITTLE ROCK –-(Ammoland.com)- The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has joined with the Governor’s task force, the Beautiful Buffalo Collaborative, to continue the evaluation and protection of America’s first national river, the Buffalo River. The announcement of the group effort and the AGFC’s partnership was announced Friday, Sept. 30.
The collaborative will be driven by an executive committee known as the Buffalo River Action Committee, which is made up of the heads of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, the Arkansas Department of Health, the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture and the Arkansas Department of Natural Resources. The AGFC will help the committee, offering its voice toward future decisions impacting the river and “boots on the ground” to protect this valuable Arkansas resource.
“The Buffalo holds a special place in the hearts of just about everyone at the AGFC,” said AGFC Director Jeff Crow. “As a steward of the fish and wildlife resources of Arkansas, we are excited about our role in this new endeavor.”
The Beautiful Buffalo Collaborative will work to identify issues impacting the water quality wildlife habitat and recreation of the entire Buffalo River Watershed. It will combine the resources of all agencies involved to create and maintain achievable standards of high-quality water, aquatic habitat and public recreational use of the river and report annually to the Governor about progress made and recommendations for future actions.
“It is rare to see such partnerships focus on a single watershed or river, but that’s just how important the Buffalo is to the people of Arkansas,” Crow said. “Just as President Eisenhower protected the Buffalo from dam attempts in the 1950s, Gov. Hutchinson has made a statement that this national treasure is not to be compromised, and I applaud him for that action.”
