How often do US police officers discharge their weapons?

Interesting way of looking at the statistics.  Comparing police shootings to the number of people victimized by armed criminals in a given year and city.

A Pathway To Competency

Cecil Burch talks about the various martial arts systems and which one he recommends that you study.  I’m very grateful for the years I spent wrestling in junior high and high school.  It led to a good base of skill that would be impossible to duplicate at this stage of my life.

Rare images of the Bonnie and Clyde death scene

If you aren’t familiar with the gunfight that killed Bonnie and Clyde, you owe it to yourself to read this article.  If you want more info, I highly recommend the book Texas Ranger: The Epic Life of Frank Hamer, the Man Who Killed Bonnie and Clyde

Back to One

fireshot-screen-capture-070-chiron_-back-to-one-chirontraining_blogspot_com_2016_11_back-to-one_html

“Simple truth is that no matter how alert, fit, skilled, experienced, equipped… name any combination you want… there is something out there that can crush you like a bug on a windshield. The incidents are rare, so most will never face them. And if you do face them and die, which is common, you don’t have to work out the emotional issues afterwards. But when you hit complete helplessness and live, that can really mess you up.

We train to be harder to kill. That’s cool. It’s cool right until we become invested in the identity. When we start to believe that we can handle anything. Confidence is fine, but when it is not paired with humility and the sure and certain knowledge that the world is bigger than you and can bring you down, it creates a vulnerability.

How Much Protein Do We Really Need?

Clerk Loses Fight for Gun with Armed Robber

A poor outcome after a gun takeaway failed.  Barriers like this counter make it extremely difficult to successfully perform a gun strip.

IS victim-operated IED switch designs in Iraq

An update on the design of recent ISIS improvised explosive switches being currently used in Iraq.  If you have an interest in bombs and terrorism, give it a read.

Vehicle Penetration Lab

Vehicles frequently frustrate handgun and rifle rounds.  The bottom line with shooting into cars is that it is completely unpredictable.  If your round only has to penetrate sheet metal door skin or a side window, the round will probably penetrate.  If it hits any structure inside the door itself, it likely won’t.  Watch the short video.  Lots of close range rifle fire, but only a few rounds penetrated intact.

Wadcutter Ammo for Self-Defense

wadcutter-featured-1

Chris details the justifications for using a full wadcutter as a defensive round in your .38 revolver.  I’m looking forward to see the results of his upcoming gelatin tests.

Tested: CCI Copper-22 Ammunition

cci_lede_001_cci-cop21_white_01s

One more article on ammunition testing.  I like all copper hollowpoints as defensive rounds.  Now CCI is making an all-copper .22 bullet.  I’m glad to see that the round is accurate and reliable.  I hope someone does some penetration/expansion gel testing soon.

Vehicle Security Basics for Survival in Bad Times

I doubt most of you live or work in an environment where this knowledge is necessary, but it doesn’t hurt to know how to search a car for bombs.  This may be especially useful for you cops who drive take-home cruisers.

The Ten Commandments of Propaganda

51oreqbqjol-_sx322_bo1204203200_

What I’m reading..

I’ve been working my way through this book over the last few days.  It isn’t an easy read, but contains some amazing information about how propaganda is created and disseminated.  I’m really shocked at how often I identify these techniques when looking at stories on my Facebook news feed.

In College and Hiding From Scary Ideas

22shulevitz-blog427

“The confusion is telling, though. It shows that while keeping college-level discussions “safe” may feel good to the hypersensitive, it’s bad for them and for everyone else. People ought to go to college to sharpen their wits and broaden their field of vision. Shield them from unfamiliar ideas, and they’ll never learn the discipline of seeing the world as other people see it. They’ll be unprepared for the social and intellectual headwinds that will hit them as soon as they step off the campuses whose climates they have so carefully controlled. What will they do when they hear opinions they’ve learned to shrink from? If they want to change the world, how will they learn to persuade people to join them?”

N-Acetylcysteine: A Guide

I’ve been taking NAC supplements for quite awhile.  NAC helps to reduce liver damage from drinking alcohol.  I had no idea it did all this other stuff as well.  I use the NOW Foods brand and have been very happy with them.

CARRY THE MOST GUN POSSIBLE

bigglockgunfirepowerman

Mas makes some very good points. I won’t say that a .38 snub or .380 auto can’t do the job. Statistically, they have resolved the majority of conflicts where they have been used. It’s also true that statistically speaking, you aren’t likely to need a gun at all.

We carry guns for those “long tail” events…for situations that fall outside the statistical norm. I choose to carry a gun (Glock 19) that will carry me through even if the parameters of my gunfight fall outside the statistical norm as well.
