Iowa woman accused of voter registration fraud
A Denison, Iowa, resident has been arrested on suspicion of voter registration fraud.
Authorities allege that Maria Isabel Flores Lopez committed perjury on Sept. 11, 2010, in nearby Carroll by falsifying a voter registration application.
The alleged offense occurred at the driver’s license station while Lopez was applying for a license, said Carroll County Attorney John Werden. The 1993 Motor Voter Act allows voters to register at such stations.
The complaint says she used another person’s name and falsely claimed to be a U.S. citizen when filling out the voter application.
The investigation into Lopez began after the other person was arrested in an unrelated matter earlier this year.
Lopez, 39, was arrested Wednesday and was being held at the Carroll County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Lopez, who is believed to be from Mexico, is not accused of voting illegally.
Earlier this year, charges of election misconduct against three Council Bluffs residents were dismissed because a key witness was unable to testify. The three were accused of registering to vote when they were not U.S. citizens.
Perjury is a felony in Iowa. The maximum punishment is a five-year prison term and a fine of $7,500.
