UKIP wins its FIRST COUNCIL – in THANET! CHECK out these FAMILIAR NAMES!

Although Nigel Farage lost his bid to be MP in South Thanet, UKIP did win control of its first local government:  Thanet in Kent  Here‘s the BBC report.

UKIP has won control of its first UK council, gaining overall control of Thanet District Council in Kent.

UKIP won 33 seats, Conservatives have 18, Labour four, and independents one – 29 seats were needed for a majority.

The BBC also reports that UKIP gained over 150 seats in the local elections for a total (in this election) of 182.

Now for some great names my Virginia readers will appreciate:

Bath – Tory gain from LD

Bedford – Tory hold

Boston and Skegness – Tory hold (but UKIP had a strong second only 4300 votes behind)

There are four seats with Bristol in their name – Labour held two, the Tories one and Labour won one from the LDs.

In Buckingham, the speaker was virtually unopposed by the major parties but UKIP got just over 20%

In Chester City, Labour bested the Tory by only 93 votes (the UKIP hopeful won nearly 4200 votes)

Chesterfield was a Labour hold

Chichester is solidly Conservative

Chippenham is also solidly in the Tory camp, a switch from the LDs
