In yet another headline causing concern about the state of relations between the U.S. and Russia, a political scientist with close ties to the Kremlin says he’s already prepping for the worst.
Sergei Markov, a member of the Moscow-based Civic Chamber, says that Russian officials are discussing the likelihood of armed conflict with the West more seriously than they have in decades.
“The war might begin even before the November elections in the U.S.,” he told the Daily Beast.
“I personally plan to stock 200 cans of pork to be ready for a potential war crisis and I advise everybody to do the same,” he added.
In a separate interview, Markov pointed to a shrinking likelihood that U.S. and Russian officials will reach an agreement on Syria and the U.S.’s continued relationships with known terror organizations in the region as a major problem.
“We see that the U.S.-Russian cooperation is getting worse. President Barack Obama should prohibit the Pentagon and the CIA from working with terrorists to improve it,” he said. “Barack Obama should break the Pentagon’s military alliance with al-Qaida represented by Jabhat al-Nusra, which really exists.”
As for how a new administration might affect the situation, Markov said it’s hard to know how either candidate would handle the Syria situation based on campaign rhetoric alone.
“They say what their allies, which can bring them to power, want to hear. As Donald Trump can be brought to power by an American voter, Trump says what an ordinary American voter wants to hear – that it is necessary to fight against terrorists together with Russia,” Markov said. “Hillary Clinton can be brought to power by the U.S. establishment, therefore, she says what the establishment wants to hear – that Russia is the main enemy.
“We have no illusions about the fact that Donald Trump may be a pro-Russian politician. The U.S. foreign policy is in crisis, and nobody knows yet in what direction it will get out of this crisis. The principal unpredictability of the U.S. foreign policy coupled with an aggressiveness is the main problem of modern international relations.”
