Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has endlessly criticized GOP nominee Donald Trump for taking tax breaks after his businesses lost hundreds of millions of dollars. But Trump says she’s only criticizing him to draw attention away from how she’s made her personal fortune as a lifelong government leech.
Trump told a Colorado crowd Monday that Clinton isn’t qualified to talk about his tax situation, some details of which were just made public by a scathing New York Times report, because she has no idea how businesses are built.
“People like my opponent, Crooked Hillary Clinton, whose only method of making money is by selling government favors and granting access to special interests, know nothing about how businesses succeed and grow,” Trump said.
According to the GOP candidate, Clinton is forced to rely on campaign talk of “small petty things” rather than discussing real issues because she helped create many of the problems facing the U.S. today.
“All she can accuse the country of … is racism and attack Trump voters and Bernie voters,” Trump said.
“She’ll do everything she can to distract from the issues and her enormous corruption and criminal conduct.” he added.
Clinton has repeatedly accused Trump of paying no taxes for nearly two decades after The Times made public the details of Trump’s New York resident income tax documents without his permission.
According to the report, Trump claimed $916 million in businesses losses in 1995, “enough to wipe out more than $50 million a year in taxable income over 18 years.”
Trump’s campaign hasn’t refuted the story and the candidate says he simply used the tax laws to keep his businesses from failing, which could have put thousands of Trump employees on the street.
Trump has also noted that paying taxes isn’t doing anyone any good as long as the money is being wasted by Washington insiders.
“Put me into the board room as your representative and I will deliver for you like no politician has ever delivered, believe me,” he said during a recent speech in Texas.
