It’s March. Sandy’s Still Blogging at VR. You Know What This Post Will Say…

Monday, March 6, 2017 5:07
% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It’s March and we are on the verge of the most wonderful time of the year for sports and office pool fans (Yes the office pool should be but probably is not legal in most states and winners must pay the evil income tax on the winnings) and that is the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

And Sandy’s still trying to be the William Lloyd Garrison of sports blogging but let’s face it:   Few if any care.  But that’s okay.  But since I’m a fan of stone tablets (I used ’em when I a boy and the cuneiform is tough to carve out!) let’s place this stele up for yet another year:

  1.  The Selection Committee should be Division II/III coaches for the tourney.  That would usually make unnecessary most of these rules from the NCAA article here.  (You can actually see who the selection committee are in this article and most of them are from big basketball schools such as Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State and Stanford.  I do not question their integrity but I do think this is not a method free from suspicion.)  There should be a fan on the selection committee.  My choice for 2018:  Former (Praise God!) President Obama.  (If he is not elected President of France!)
  2. The regular season winner ought to be in the tournament and if it is needed to slightly (not to 96 teams) increase the number of schools.
  3. If there is a choice between say the 19-14 retread from the ACC or similar major conference or the 26-5 regular season team from a smaller conference, take the one from the smaller conference.  The retread had its chance to play top schools but many times the smaller conference team does not or the chance is not very favorable to the underdog school.

So here it is.  Another year.  Another NCAA tourney rant.  And 30 people will read it.  But wait until NEXT YEAR (What we Cubs fans USED TO say!  Now we say:  World Champion Chicago Cubs!  Sounds weird like President Donald Trump, doesn’t it…) and we’ll have Winter Olympic Games coverage!  Sports imperialism, maybe a new nation will win a medal and there is curling…I’m available, Bob Costas, to provide great color and controversy for the Games and maybe interview those female curlers from Northern Europe…
