13-Yr-Old Says He Wants to Run Away, Then Tells Officer to Go Look in His Room…
When you’re a police officer you never know what kinds of calls you’re going to get. And you never know when one of those calls will change your life forever.
After 13-year-old Cameron Simmons made a distressed call to the Sumter Police Department, Officer Gaetano Acerra went to check in on him.
When he started talking to Cameron, the boy told him that his mom was yelling at him for playing his older brother’s video games and he wanted to run away from home, but Officer Acerra sensed there was more going on.
That’s when Cameron took the police officer into his bedroom. Officer Acerra couldn’t believe what he found.
The room was completely empty. There was no bed, no dresser – Cameron’s clothes were just thrown in a trash bag on the floor.
Acerra learned that Cameron’s mom had fallen on hard times after making an unexpected move from Texas to South Carolina to care for a sick relative.
Acerra talked to the boy and convinced him not to run away, but little did Cameron know that the officer was planning something much greater.
Unbeknownst to Cameron or his family, Officer Acerra began to gather items for the family. Then one day he surprised them all by dropping off a brand new desk, chair, bed, TV, and Wii gaming system. In addition, he brought a full bedroom set for Cameron’s brother and an air hockey table for them to play together!
The entire family was shocked and Cameron was left in tears when he saw the officer’s generosity.
Officer Acerra said he didn’t do it for praise or recognition.
“I put a smile on this kid’s face, and a friendship,” he said. “I think that’s well worth it.”
In a time when things are so tense between people and the police, it is heartening to see one officer go above and beyond the call of duty to help someone in need. The example he set for Cameron and his brother is sure to last a lifetime.

This really is heartwarming…this officer is such a good man….more people need to be like him…service to others !
this should be in the spirituality section instead of the alternative section…this is one of the most Christian things I have ever read on BIN…good job, officer Acerra….I don’t know what kind of Christian you are, but I want you to know that you are blessed and highly favored…Jesus has visited this family by standing in your boots….Prov. 19:17
actually officer Acerra visited this family standing in his own boots – fairy-tale characters cannot and do not visit people
BRAVO!
I see runaways at truck stops sleeping in the drivers lounge or TV room sometimes and at greyhound bus stops.
what a wonderful person. I wish Cameron and his family and of course the policeman the very best. I really do.
It would be nice if blacks didn’t buy into the division narrative of hate when most whites in todays world pay no heed to color. Sure there are bigots, racists of all kinds. Give the majority a chance, the media and cartel elite wants a civil war for communism NWO. They promote hate. Great cop. Family man and color doesn’t change caring or loving your brother.
My heart skipped a beat on this one. Losing myself in the story the pressure valve wouldn’t hold against the sensitive weight of tears bearing down as I finished reading the last sentence. I know this officer felt a different kind of release when his efforts brought so much pleasure and positive change to this family. I believe him when he said, “for him it was about putting a smile on this kids face”, but don’t kid yourself, this officer’s heart burst forth joy when the light in that smile hit him like a bolt out of the blue… like a child’s smile is prone to do.
Goes to show, good people come in all shapes and sizes. All ages and genders and all types of uniforms. Thank Goodness, for good people like this Officer Acerra. May his goodness and his kindness spread like an octopus in all directions of the universe throughout time and eternity. May the Angels always be with him in this life and the next and may peace be ever lasting for his future and the future of his bloodline. May that child and his family forever be grateful and spread the goodness bestowed upon them to others throughout their lives as well. Amen.
Peformance. Real police are butchers.
