The Agenda: Trump Jr. emails and conservative thoughts on the GOP healthcare problem

Every weekend, Washington’s biggest insiders join some of the nation’s most watched news programs to set the tone for the week ahead. Here’s what they said and the real reasons behind the mass messaging.

At worst, Donald Trump Jr. made a mistake in meeting with a Russian lawyer ahead of the 2016 election– there’s still no proof that he committed any type of crime.

That was the gist of most talk about the controversy that gripped most of last week’s headlines.

“Donald Junior made a mistake,” former Trump adviser Michael Caputo, said during a segment on NBC’s “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly “and he’d do it entirely differently if he had an opportunity.”

CIA veteran John Sipher, appearing on the same show, said the events leading up to the meeting meant Moscow or some entity was “human fishing.”

But, Caputo added, even if Russia was attempting to get to Trump Jr, there’s no indication that the campaign was willing to play ball.

“The Donald Trump campaign had nothing to do with Russia.”

“There was no collusion. Do you think that place was organized enough to collude with the lunch counter across the street,” he said.

A top Trump lawyer, meanwhile, said on ABC that he doesn’t see the Russia investigation reaching a point that would merit presidential testimony.

“Look the president was very clear, that if it came to that, and I don’t think it will, but if it came to that, he will do that,” lawyer Jay Sekulow told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl Sunday. “You asked him the question in the Rose Garden, the president answered it. So, you know, I take the president on this word there.”

“I don’t think it will happen,” Sekulow added later. “The president said he would do it if — yes, at this point we have no indication at all whatsoever of an investigation of the president with regard to any of this.”

Aside from the expected talk about the Trump/Russia controversy, Sunday show guests discussed the Republican healthcare bill. The best of those appearances was Sen. Rand Paul’s visit with CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

The current healthcare bill is currently stalled, which Paul said will give conservatives an opportunity to build opposition against what he called a lie to voters.

He said:

You know, I think the longer the bill’s out there, the more conservative Republicans are going to discover that it’s not repeal. And the more that everybody’s going to discover that it keeps the fundamental flaw of Obamacare. It keeps the insurance mandates that cause the prices to rise, which chase young, healthy people out of the marketplace, and leads to what people call adverse selection, where you have a sicker and sicker insurance pool and the premiums keep rising through the roof.

And one of the amazing things to me is, for all the complaints of Republicans about Obamacare, we keep that fundamental flaw. And the reason you know Republicans acknowledge this is they make a giant insurance fund to subsidize those prices. Basically, they’re subsidizing the death spiral of Obamacare. So for all Republicans’ complaints about the death spiral of Obamacare, they don’t fix it, they simply subsidize it with taxpayer monies, which I just don’t agree with at all.
