Trump’s Impeachable Offense – and Paul Ryan’s and Mitch McConnell’s
Lost amid the hullabaloo that is the phony Trump dossier, Trump-Russia collusion charges, paid off porn actresses and Robert Mueller’s witch hunt, President Donald Trump committed an offense for which he should be impeached.
His recent attack on Syria – a country which has not attacked the U.S. (and in fact, is incapable of attacking the U.S) and which poses no threat – was immoral, illegal and unconstitutional. Beyond that, it was based on a lie, as all recent U.S. wars have been. It therefore reaches the threshold of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
The Trump cabal and the war party propagandists make two claims in support of Trump’s actions: the original congressional Authorization for Use of Military Force granted George W. Bush in the wake of 9/11, and the War Powers Resolution.
The AUMF granted Bush the lesser the authority to use all “necessary and appropriate force” against those whom he determined “planned, authorized, committed or aided” the September 11th attacks, or who harbored said persons or groups. That “authority” was used by Bush and later Barack Obama to make war in the Philippines, Georgia, Yemen, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Iraq, Somalia and Syria.
Obama’s incursion into Syria without congressional authorization was one of the impeachable offenses I cited in my column, “The case for Obama’s impeachment,” in 2014.
Under Obama in December 2016, the Office of President published a brief interpreting the AUMF as providing congressional authorization for the use of force against al-Qaida and other militant groups. In other words, the Deep State determined that it has a blank check to name anyone and everyone a “militant group” and attack it whenever and wherever it chooses.
That is a huge expansion of the AUMF’s wording, and Congress’ inaction in challenging this is a high crime for which its leaders should be removed from office.
Syria didn’t plan, authorize, commit or aid the 9/11 attacks. In fact, Syria is fighting U.S.-backed al-Qaida linked terrorists trying to overthrow the legitimate Syrian government. So Trump had no legal standing under the AUMF to attack Syria.
The War Powers Resolution grants power to “the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.
It does not grant the president the authority to launch military strikes against a county without prior congressional approval unless that country has attacked the U.S., its possessions or military. Syria has not.
For waging his attacks – last year’s and the most recent one – on Syria, Trump should be impeached. So should Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the whole of congressional leadership.
Of course Trump won’t be because he’s doing exactly what the unseen powers want him to do. Nothing gets Trump more accolades from the GOP establishment than dropping bombs and fomenting wars and regime change.
Nor will Ryan, McConnell, etc. The Constitution is meaningless to the establishment as it is contrary to their goals.
P.S. If you don’t believe the U.S. is involved in a war in Syria, the Marine Times reports that in five months a Marine artillery battalion fired more rounds in Raqqa, Syria, than any Marine or Army battalion since Vietnam… more than was fired during the whole of the invasion of Iraq.
A small Marine artillery battalion fired more rounds than any artillery battalion since Vietnam.
“They fired more rounds in five months in Raqqa, Syria, than any other Marine artillery battalion, or any Marine or Army battalion, since the Vietnam war,” said Army Sgt. Major. John Wayne Troxell, the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Freedom Bunker: I totally agree with your article. Who changed Trumps mind? Two weeks prior he stated he was pulling out all troops. The day before Trump bombed Syria I contacted the White House and told them to wait for the inspections. So for Trump to knowingly go in before any inspections is a crime in itself. I contacted the White House again after the bombing and told them I
no longer support trump and cease all mailings to my house. Please recall that Putin stated an attack on Syria would be an attack on Russia. If-if any chemicals are found that would indicate a set-up/ planted deliberately. I don’t know what Putin will do but he is certainly justified to respond in a like manner. However I am sure Putin, well let me put it a different way, Putin does not want Nuclear war because he is far more intelligent and he cares about his people. I just don’t know. Perhaps, if Putin does nothing then
he is playing Chess not checkers.
