The North Pole

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

With Santa Claus coming to visit many of our homes soon, it has us thinking about the North Pole. Have you ever wondering where this magical place is and why Santa would reside there? We’ve put together a bunch of facts that will answer just about every question you, or your kids might have about the North Pole.

Where exactly is it?
The North Pole is the Earth’s most northernmost place. No matter what direction you stand in the North Pole you will be facing south. It’s the perfect place for Santa to live because it’s 700 miles away from the nearest piece of land.

Is it a country?
The North Pole isn’t a part of any country. There’s no land there, but it does have a thick layer of ice that ranges from about 6 to 9 feet. Canada would like to claim the North Pole as its own, but has not been successful thus far.

How cold does it get?
It is pretty cold in the North Pole for most of the year, but it’s not the coldest place on earth. During the winter months, the temperatures tend to be minus 29 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer months it tend to get warmer with an average temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the reasons why it is so much colder during the winter is because it is straight darkness for months on end.

Can I visit there?
You can visit the North Pole. There are some cruising expeditions available. The best time to go tends to be during the months of June and July when polar bears and walruses can be easily spotted looking for food. A popular cruise choice is one that goes around the Arctic Circle. This area is around the North Pole and few people can claim that they’ve visited it.

Why do people believe that North Pole is where Santa lives?
Since there is no land at the North Pole, many people have speculated that it would make the perfect place for a mysterious figure like Santa Clause to live. It’s timeless, just like he is and it’s wintery all year long.

If you plan on visiting the North Pole you probably won’t see Santa as he’s busy in his workshop. However, you probably will see a lot of interesting wildlife. A trip to the North Pole will definitely make for a memorable experience. Just make sure you bundle up!
