History of Father’s Day
On the third Sunday of every June the U.S. celebrates some of the most special people in the world: Fathers! Celebrations for this day are very similar to those that occur on Mother’s Day except there probably aren’t any spa days or pampering. The first Father’s Day started in one of two ways.
History of Father’s Day
In Addition, one theory of how Father’s Day started was because of a particular individual in the State of Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd was the driving force behind it as she wanted to honor her dad in some way since he singlehandedly raised six children. However, the original celebration was supposed to happen on the June 5, her father’s birthday, but there wasn’t enough time to pull together the celebration so they changed it to the third Sunday of the month, June 19, 1908.
Accordingly, a few weeks later on July 5, 1908 Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in West Virginia held a special church service to recognize fathers in the church. This idea was inspired by Grace Golden Clayton who urged the pastor at her church to hold this service after a nearby mine explosion, that occurred a couple of months earlier, killed 361 men, many of them fathers. President Woodrow Wilson liked the idea of a special day for fathers and became the first president to celebrate it in 1916. It didn’t officially become a holiday until a Congressional Act formally acknowledged it in 1972.

Fatherly Sayings…
Fathers have a lot of funny sayings that many of us have heard from time to time throughout the years. Here’s some of our favorites:
“I used to walk to school in (insert a high number here) miles of snow.”
“Go ask your mother.”
“Don’t make me stop this car!”
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“Were you raised in a barn?”
“It builds character.”
“If you keep making that face it will stay that way.”
“Because I said so.”
In conclusion, Fathers are dedicated, hardworking and deserve to be celebrated every year. If you are looking for something special for your dad, skip the tie, mug or “World’s Greatest Father T-Shirt” and get him a nice big steak, a gift card to his favorite store or book him a trip to one of his favorite vacation spots.
Happy Father’s Day to all of you dad’s out there!
