Keeping Bugs Out While Camping

A lot of people love camping with the exception of one things, bugs! These tiny creatures can bite, crawl or just be a nuisance. They can keep campers from sleeping and make a camping trip miserable. Luckily there are some things you can do to keep some of these creepy crawlies out of your tent.

Insecticides

Insecticides can provide a lot of relief from bugs while camping. You can spray it on yourself if you want to keep bugs off of you. If you don’t want to spray it directly onto your skin you can try to spray it around the perimeter of your tent. Just remember that it will only provide you protection while you are in your tent. It’s also a good idea to try to find an insecticide that’s water resistant just in case it rains.

Baits

For those that don’t want to use insecticides and don’t plan to be outside of their tent when a lot of bugs are out, baits are a good option. These baits can be placed outside of the tent. They are meant to attract insects. If used properly, they will keep the majority of the insects out of the tent as they will be attracted to the bait and not the inhabitants inside of the tent.

Natural Repellants

There are a number of natural repellents that can be used to keep bugs away while camping. Lemon eucalyptus oil is extremely helpful. You don’t even have to place it onto your body to experience the benefits of it. All you have to do is to place the oil into small containers and put them outside of the tent. Just be cautious that children and animals can’t access the containers.

Other Options

There are some other things you can do when you are camping to keep bugs away. Don’t invite them in by leaving the tent open. Always close the flaps and go in and out of the tent quickly. Also, don’t leave open food or drinks sitting around. Roll up tents and blankets when not in use so that bugs won’t try to nest in them. If you still are getting a lot of bugs inside of your tent despite taking all of these precautions, your tent could have some holes in it that you aren’t aware of or it might not be sealed properly. In this instance it may be necessary to buy a new tent.
