Travelers Assist Hurricane Repair Damage in Hard-Hit Caribbean Islands

The Prime Minister of St Lucia is calling for travelers to ignore reports of widespread damage and decimated infrastructure and come to the Caribbean. More than 25 million people visit the Caribbean each year, to soak up the sun, go scuba diving, and sample the region’s famous cuisine. However, following widespread media coverage of the total decimation in the wake of Hurricanes Maria and Irma, many Caribbean island nations are concerned that tourists will be staying away in their droves this year.

Storm Damage Not as Widespread as People Believe

What isn’t so obvious from the media coverage of last year’s hurricane season is that only 30% of the islands were badly affected by hurricane damage. Barbuda, St Martin, Dominica, the US Virgin Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, and the Turks and Caicos were all badly affected, but damage restoration projects are well underway. Some islands won’t be open for business in 2018, but they are in a minority. Most are happy to welcome tourists, and with tourism a major part of the Caribbean’s economy, the last thing anyone wants is declining tourism in the region.

Many of the worst-hit islands, with the exception of Barbuda, which was fully evacuated, expect to be open for business by the end of 2018. Not all of the hotels, restaurants, villas, and resorts will be welcoming tourists, as in some cases, the damage was just too great, but some are open for business and tourist dollars are much-needed. Islands such as St Lucia and Antigua are welcoming tourists with open arms. Antigua hotels and resorts, St Lucia villas, and local businesses are up and running, so it pays to look around for some bargain breaks.

Tourists Trickling Back

Statistics show that tourists are slowly trickling back to the region and tourism chiefs are hoping the trend will continue. The more tourists who visit the region, the more money is generated, money that can be used to rebuild infrastructure, housing, medical services, hotels, and resorts.

2018 Hurricane Season

Islanders are praying that the 2018 hurricane season is nowhere near as devastating as the extreme weather of 2017. In any given year, the region is hit by around 12 tropical storms. Only six of these storms will normally evolve into full-blown hurricanes. 2017 was remarkable for it was hit by a record 17 named storms. 10 grew into hurricanes, and six of them then became damaging category three and above hurricanes.

The beginning of 2017 was largely uneventful from a weather perspective, but it soon became obvious that the region had been lulled into a dangerously false sense of security. Hurricane Harvey was the first monster storm, with winds of up to 130 MPH. Category five Hurricane Irma, the worst hurricane ever recorded, was not far behind Harvey. Irma soon laid waste to several Caribbean islands. Not long after, Hurricane Maria destroyed what was left.

Forecasters are predicting a relatively normal hurricane season for 2018. But, as everyone knows, it only takes one particularly vicious storm to develop into an even more lethal hurricane for things to go from bad to worse. Only time will tell what 2018 will bring.
