Free Things To Do In Hong Kong

It’s no secret that Hong Kong can be an expensive city to visit. However, you shouldn’t put off visiting this city as there are plenty of free things to do. These are some of the things that you can do in Hong Kong for free.

Symphony of Lights
No matter what time of year you are in Hong Kong, you can enjoy the Symphony of Lights. This daily sound and light show is the largest permanent light and sound show in the world. It takes place at 8 p.m. each day and features laser lights, pyrotechnic fireworks and music. The show last about 14 minutes.

Free Walking Tours
You can see Hong Kong for free by going on a walking tour. These tours last about 2 ½ hours and occur Monday through Sunday. You can learn things about the God of War Lord Gwan Yu, see some of the area’s famous pubs and even try some stocking milk tea along the way.

Museum of History
If you are interested in learn about the history of Hong Kong, you can do so for free while you are in the city. The Museum of History features numerous collections that highlight things like the archaeology and ethnography of the area. You can easily spend an afternoon here.

Popular Local Markets
The local markets are an attraction in and of themselves. They are a great place to people watch and take in all of the action. The Ladies’ Market, Flower Market and Goldfish Market are all popular choices. While it doesn’t cost anything to visit these markets, you may be tempted to buy a souvenir or two while you are here.

Chungking Mansion
The Chungking Mansion is located at 36-44 Nathan Road. It’s made up of numerous hotels and shops. The area is rather interesting and there tends to be a lot of activity going on. If you do have a little bit of money to spend, grab lunch while you are here. There are quite a few restaurants located here that are very affordable, including Butt Fast Food and Syed Bukhara.

Not Free, But Cheap Tea Ceremonies
Unfortunately, the Hong Kong Tourism Board no longer offers free tea ceremonies, which used to be a favorite among tourists. However, some tea shops do offer inexpensive tea ceremonies. The ones found out Ming Cha tend to be popular. They have a tasting menu and there is almost always someone there that speaks English so you won’t have to worry about a language barrier.
