Some travel trends are beneficial for travelers while others aren’t. Whether you travel a little or a lot, you need to be aware of what’s going on in the world of travel and how it can affect you. These are some of the newest travel trends that aren’t good for travelers.

There Aren’t As Many Protections For Travelers
While the need for real-time pricing for airfares and fees is abundant, it doesn’t seem that it will happen anytime soon. The U.S. Department of Transportation withdrew a proposal in December that would require that airlines be transparent with their fares and fees for consumers. Many major airlines are trying to have many rules repealed that would protect consumers. As far as hotels go, many of them are still able to charge exorbitant “resort fees” even though it’s not clear what travelers are actually getting by paying these fees. This means that the great hotel rate that a consumer sees upon booking may not include a hefty amount of extra charges that need to be paid as well.  Cruise lines have also introduced non-refundable fares that seem attractive when you first book, but they have tons of restrictions including not being able to upgrade or even add someone to your cabin, which often ends up costing consumers more in the end than if they had booked the best promotion.

Safety Threats Increasing
Travelers have a lot on their minds when it comes to travel safety. Unfortunately, this won’t change any time soon. Concerns are continuing to grow as we hear more and more about threats and travel incidents each day. The good news for travelers is that most people are able to travel without incident.

Not Much Oversight When It Comes To Ridesharing
Thanks to companies like Uber and Lyft, travelers can easily get to where they need to go at many destinations. However, it isn’t always affordable. Rideshare companies can charge “surge” or “prime” pricing if there is a great demand for rides and not enough drivers to meet these demands. So if you are a traveler that will be relying on ridesharing to get to or from a popular event, expect to pay a lot of money as there’s not a lot of oversight when it comes to just how much these companies can charge consumers.

Less Train Routes
If you like to travel by train then you will be disappointed to know that many of Amtrak’s routes are at risk of being cut. This includes eliminating service to over 220 cities that the train currently services. Interestingly enough, Amtrak has had record revenues lately and in November 2017 they had the highest sales that they have ever recorded.
