A real Norman Rockwell moment...

[Douglas Habecker] I saw a commercial recently for Healthcare.gov, the federal government’s barely functional health insurance website.  It featured a rather rotund mother and her mostly grown son.  The mother had posted a note on the refrigerator to remind her son to visit the Healthcare.gov website to apply for government run health insurance.  

The producers of this little piece of propaganda did their best to make it a real Norman Rockwell moment.  Very motherly, really warm and fuzzy.  Well, as motherly as a bunch of politically correct progressives can make socialized medicine, I guess.

The commercial ends with the son asking his mother: “Will you ever stop worrying about me?  And she replies:  “I will when you get covered.”   Now maybe I come from a different era.  Or maybe I’m just unable to accept the political reality of the day.  But this whole thing makes me want to throw something at my television.  Call me old fashioned, but my idea of good, sound parental advice is not encouraging your child to enroll in a government run healthcare scheme.   “How are your college classes going?”  Sure.  “Don’t be late for work!”  Absolutely.  Or even “I don’t really like that new girl your dating!”  But “Hey son, you should sign up for the government’s latest form of wealth redistribution!  Getcha some of those free taxpayer handouts!”

Really?  Freakin’ really?  This is where we are in society today?  Good parenting now entails encouraging our children to sign up for socialized medicine?  (Or whatever else god-forsaken ponzi scheme the federal government can dream up.)  Not: “Son, work hard and you’ll earn a good living!”  Or: I’m proud of you for making the Dean’s List!”  Nope.  “Sign up for a government hand out!”  God damn pathetic if you ask me.
