The White House discovers itself in a familiar situation: nevertheless a different tell-all publication, this one by ex – deputy F.B.I. director Andrew McCabe, is making Donald Trump look negative. Throughout the book and on his accompanying press expedition, McCabe describes Trump as an slapdash, self-serving representative of mayhem – an assessment embraced by numerous others in their accounts of his presidency. Instead of sounding alarm bells, it appears predictable that they’ll be sifted through the partisan filters through which other notifications about this president have been acquired. For those who mistrust Trump, McCabe will validate their fears. For those who support him, McCabe’s fiction is more proof that silent and invisible powers have long been attempting to subvert his presidency.

The White House, this reveals, is making an attempt to implement that divide to its advantage, seeking to play up passages that make it appear as though a questionable association of officials has been leading a “witch hunt.” The attempt appears to be already underway: Trump has targeted McCabe with an assortment of Twitter attacks, accusing him of plotting a “very illegal act” with Rod Rosenstein and Jeff Sessions, and employing the link between the ex – F.B.I. deputy and Comey, whom Trump terminated in 2017. “Remember this,” Trump tweeted Monday, “Andrew McCabe didn’t go to the bathroom without the approval of Leakin’ James Comey!” He has also backed claims by Dan Bongino, one of his Fox News friends, that talks McCabe claimed Rosenstein engineered about employing the 25th Amendment to declare Trump unfit for office were part of an “illegal coup attempt.”

The perception that the F.B.I. was engaged in, in the words of Rush Limbaugh, a “silent coup” in opposition to Trump, is a matter one of the president’s top allies claims he plans to investigate. “Was this an attempted bureaucratic coup? I don’t know,” Senator Lindsey Graham explained on Face the Nation Sunday. “I don’t know who is telling the truth. I know Rosenstein vehemently denied it, but we’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

That McCabe’s justification for the origins of the Russia probe is so polarizing heightens fears about how the conclusions of that probe will be received. Robert Mueller is supposed to release his conclusions eventually, and the president’s camp is said to be anxious about what will come of the investigation, which has already nabbed various top Trump officials. With Democrats controlling the House, an incriminating special-counsel review could certainly offer a threat. But in a stubbornly partisan Washington, where Trump has faced few tangible consequences, it’s far from improbable that anything Mueller discovers can be similarly swept up in partisanship. “I think that’s why we started our investigation,” McCabe instructed Cooper on CNN of the president’s suspiciously warm relationship with Russia. “And I’m really anxious to see where Mueller concludes that.”
