The 'Burka' Imprisons Muslim Women

A slide presentation is circulating on the Internet called “Burka, The Canvas Prison.” It is aptly named because it points out that the female Muslim’s required garment, the ‘burka,” is really a prison for the woman wearing it. However, the 60 slides do go far beyond the obvious display of their constraining and limited nature on the female wearer. The pictures and short narratives show why it is so important for the continued power of the Afghanistan government and “Sharia Law,” that strict rules are maintain controlling the burka.

The history of the burka is said to go back to the 13th century BC in the Persian Empire before the Muslim religion existed. It was during the early twentieth century in Afghanistan, that its use was imposed on the 200 women of the Habibulla Harem to prevent other men from being tempted by their beauty. One can easily make the case after viewing these slides, that the burka was designed as an instrument of a male created and dominated ‘Sharia Law’ civilization. Its form follows its function: to restrain women from most physical, emotional and mental interaction, especially with other men.  The slides demonstrate how little women are thought of under Muslim laws and how little participation they are to have in their patriarchal society.

One can also see from these photos why the outlawing of the burka in France is so controversial of an issue. In addition to the security risks that are inherent in a ‘burka’ which hides the person’s identity, the covering creates the framework for a male dominated tyrannical society that is the antithesis of a democracy. Remove the ‘burka’ and the Western world will enter and influence the very foundation of Muslim life.
