The Israeli government is torturing Palestinian children, including keeping them in outdoor cages during winter, according to a new human rights report.
A report by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) claims children suspected of minor crimes have been subjected to “public caging,” threats and acts of sexual violence and military trials without representation.
“[A]ttorneys met detainees who described to them a shocking picture: in the middle of the night dozens of detainees were transferred to the external iron cages built outside the IPS transition facility in Ramla,” the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) wrote on its website.
“It turns out that this procedure, under which prisoners waited outside in cages, lasted for several months, and was verified by other officials.”
Israel winter temperatures range from low 40s to low 70s,
according to the Israel Travel Guide. The guide says that people should avoid excessive exposure to the sun; ”wear protective head coverings; and use sun blocks, even in winter.”
The incident in Ramla was just one example of a broad range of abuses being suffered, according to the report.
The United States and Israel are the closest of friends and allies. Regardless of Israel’s ongoing human rights abuses against Palestinians, the U.S. turns a blind eye and congressional support for Israel continues, mainly through foreign aid.
Since 1985, the U.S. has provided nearly $3 billion in grants annually to Israel. Israel has been the largest annual recipient of American aid from 1976 to 2004 and the largest cumulative recipient of aid since World War II. The human rights group says that the Istanbul Protocol Manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture Raises the following issues about torture and children that must be understood:
Perpetrators [of torture] often attempt to justify their acts of torture and ill-treatment by the need to gather information…One of the central aims of torture is to reduce an individual to a position of extreme helplessness and distress …
Thus, torture is a means of attacking an individual’s fundamental modes of psychological and social functioning. The torturer attempts to destroy a victim’s sense of being grounded in a family and society as a human being with dreams, hopes and aspirations for the future. In addition, torture can profoundly damage intimate relationships between spouses, parents, children, other family members and relationships between the victims and their communities (Para. 235)…
Torture can impact a child directly or indirectly. The impact can be due to the child’s having been tortured or detained, the torture of parents or close family members or witnessing torture and violence. When individuals in a child’s environment are tortured, the torture will inevitably have an impact on the child, albeit indirect, because torture affects the entire family and community of torture victims…
Adolescence is a turbulent developmental period. The effects of torture can vary widely. Torture experiences may cause profound personality changes in adolescents resulting in antisocial behaviour. Alternatively, the effects of torture on adolescents may be similar to those seen in younger children (Para. 310 &312).
“The majority of Palestinian child detainees are charged with throwing stones, and 74 per cent experience physical violence during arrest, transfer or interrogation,” according to the report.

So you probably don’t believe that Israel uses skunk trucks to douse Palestinian people and homes with sewer smelling liquid leaving the neighborhoods uninhabitable? There’s plenty of videos of Palestinians being forcibly removed from their own homes. Hopefully this will happen to you and your family and you will become compassionate to others.

Note re academic boycott of Israel: On Dec 16, the American Studies Association announced that its membership had voted to endorse an academic boycott of Israel, the second and most high-profile U.S. scholarly association to do so thus far. The boycott is one prong of a global justice movement that is anchored in international law and universal principles of human rights. It aims to help end Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights.
Sadly, in the ensuing days, ASA members have been savaged in the press, attacked by Israeli government officials [1], smeared as anti-Semites, and targeted with threatening emails and phone calls. Most of the criticism has focused on claims [2] that the ASA was stifling academic freedom, punishing Israeli scholars, and unfairly singling out Israel. As one prominent critic, David Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, asked [3], why is Israel being targeted and “not Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Sudan, or any other serial human-rights violator”?
Why Israel? ASA responded to a boycott call issued by an overwhelming majority of Palestinian civil-society organizations, including trade unions, NGOs, and student groups. They are doing what many in the international community, including President Obama, have repeatedly called on Palestinians to do: embrace nonviolent means in their struggle for freedom and self-determination. However, while Obama and others lecture Palestinians on nonviolence and then do nothing when Israel responds with violence and repression, the ASA and a growing number of other organizations-including churches, student groups, and labor unions-are taking action to support Palestinians.
