6 War Facts Likely To Surprise You

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Since any important facts about war are rarely reported by mainstream media, that’s much better at war spin and war propaganda, seeing such facts usually surprises – and angers people, especially Americans where the information is well hidden. Below are six of these facts, provided by David Swanson via Washington’s Blog.

1. Approximately 90% of all deaths in war are civilians.

“The proportion of civilian deaths and the methods for classifying deaths as civilian are debated, but civilian war deaths constitute 85% to 90% of casualties caused by war, with about 10 civilians dying for every combatant killed in battle.”

2. Militarization generates genocide, a war crime.

Swanson notes: “A top defense of war is that it must be used to prevent something worse, called genocide. Not only does militarism generate genocide rather than preventing it, but the distinction between war and genocide is a very fine one at best.”

3. The U.S. launched 201 out of the 248 armed conflicts since the end of WWII.

“Since the end of World War II, there have been 248 armed conflicts in 153 locations around the world. The United States launched 201 overseas military operations between the end of World War II and 2001, and since then, others, including Afghanistan and Iraq ….”

4. U.S. military spending dwarfs all other countries.

“The United States is responsible for 41% of the world’s total military spending. The next largest in spending are China, accounting for 8.2%; Russia, 4.1%; and the United Kingdom and France, both 3.6%… If all military … costs are included, annual [US] spending amounts to $1 trillion…

5. The US DoD manages over 555,000 facilities at over 5,000 sites, covering over 28 million acres

According to the DOD fiscal year 2012 base structure report, ‘The DOD manages global property of more than 555,000 facilities at more than 5,000 sites, covering more than 28 million acres.’ The United States maintains 700 to 1000 military bases or sites in more than 100 countries…”  Below is in visual form:

This isn’t an accident …. The Project On Military Procurement notes:

To support its world-wide empire at the turn of the 19th century, Great Britain adopted the “two power standard,” which called for the Royal Navy to be equal to the combined strength of the next two largest navies in the world. The United States has more than doubled that standard as regards budgets, and yet our politicians and senior defense officials complain such outspending is inadequate.

In other words, America has apparently adopted an “total power standard”… spending more on military than most of the rest of the world combined:

6. The United States spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined in 2011.

Not only is war bad for civilians, it is also bad for the economy and makes Americans poor.  The oligarchs are the only ones who benefit.

“One day we will all strike, and we will strike for more than a day. We will strike until we replace the “very structure of life” with different ones,” says Swanson. “We’ll strike forever, occupy everything, and never give it back.”

How could any true blue American support this? Only one U party I know in the US would end it: the Green Party. Neither it nor any other peace and justice party, however, has a chance at winning as US president win unless all top 3rd party candidates hold a meeting and decide which ONE they will back.

Lots of us don’t support this, but the “system” is so in control now theres no way to stop “it”, short of divine intervention.

Democrats have to learn to all vote third party/independent, at every level. A lot of Republicans would join them, as well as the huge number who don’t vote at all.

Not a Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, Libertarian, and don’t belong to ANY political party, and never will. The situation in the world is reaching critical mass none of you can stop what’s coming.

Good article. However the thoughts about stopping all military spending are naive. And while I don’t want anymore war, I still understand the world is a powderkeg. I don’t believe the numbers on the chi-coms spending. They now spend every dime we send them [as payment on our debt] on militarization. And numbers they release for public knowledge cannot be trusted. After all they’re communists. How many countries have been overthrown in the middle east in the last two years? Add in islamic terrorists, our own country arming al-qaeda in libya, north korea’s possible emp attack, NATO taking the wrong side on issues, and of course russia/putin….They’re are far too many threats to think we can de-militarize.Within one year of doing so we would be invaded on 3 fronts. Not because they hate us, that would be the theme, but because we are the breadbasket of the world. We have the most fertile farmland in the world here in the corn belt of the midwest. And in coming years it will be more important to other countries than energy or fresh water…
I say pull back all military in OTHER countries and guard our borders, and now! Countries like south korea and france and germany will have to fend for themselves. Go ahead call me “isolationist”…then so be it. It’s the only compromise between the no-military thought and the neocons…

Dupre is twisting facts to manufacture anti-American propaganda.

The United States Corporation – founded in 1871 by a rewrite of the US Constitution — is the war profiteer — not the American people who constitute the United States of America.

“We’ll strike forever, occupy everything, and never give it back.”

No chance of that. The evil empire is over extended and choked by debt.

And as Lao Tsu observed, “Weapon after weapon conquers everything but chaos.”

Tell me something I don’t know. Humanists and humanitarians all think that they can create their own future, that they can solve all their problems through developing their sciences and technologies, and by attempting to find common ground through “communications” with each other. Its not going to work, and the proof of this is everywhere to be seen. Its not going to work because man is governed by the “carnal sprit”. GOD does not dwell in the carnally minded.

On the subject of war spending, was watching a news report on therealnews.com and the editor of this website was talking about how much the Pentagon spends with some professor at a college somewhere in the US. They were talking about how the Pentagon IS the US economy, and it is! This led to a discussion about getting away from “fossil fuels” and going to wind, solar, and geothermal power generation systems. The professor said, and I’m paraphrasing this: Obama needs to put the US on a “war-footing” and “declare a national emergency” in order to mobilize the nation and move the US economy away from using fossil fuels (a bogus scientific theory by the way). This would, theoretically, create a new industrial base and provide many jobs, as well as tackle the major problem of global climate change. I think I now see why the various government agencies are buying up guns and ammo!

The title of the video is:

Here’s another guy talking about putting the nation on a “war-footing” in order to stop the “fight” to save the earth’s natural systems that support us. Interesting.
