San Franfrazzled: Once-in-a-lifetime picture of lightning striking iconic bridge

By Daily Mail Reporter

They say that lightning never strikes twice, but this amazing photo proves otherwise.

An incredible eight bolts struck the Bay Bridge in San Francisco last night which was captured in this incredible shot by photographer Phil McGrew, who took the photo through the rain-soaked window of his apartment.

Mr McGrew, 49, was shocked at the striking image which shows the split-second moment of electric forks hitting the span of the bridge.

Lucky strike! Eight bolts of lightning hit the iconic Bay Bridge in San Francisco in a spectacular once in a lifetime moment captured by photographer Phil McGrew

The currency trader, who took up photography as a hobby two years ago, put his camera near his window as the rare thunderstorm lashed the city at 6pm.

He said: ‘I moved from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to San Francisco about two years ago.

‘We used to get a lot of big storms in Florida, but I’ve only seen them a couple of times here.

‘When the thunder and lightning started last night, I thought I must get a picture of the lightning against the bridge.

‘My apartment looks out over Bay Bridge and I knew it would make a good shot if I could get it.’

Mr McGrew, who lives with his girlfriend Sherry, set up his camera on a long exposure for about 20 seconds.

Not realising he was about to take a once-in-a-lifetime picture, he perfectly captured the white flashes of light over the inky sky set against the golden glow of the bridge.

He said: ‘I wasn’t brave enough to go outside, plus my camera would have been soaking wet, so I just set it up next to the window and watched.

‘You couldn’t see much by just looking through the window, it was very foggy.

‘When I looked at my camera, I had a few that were just dark, and then some were very bright where I had just missed the strikes. Then I saw this one, it was incredible.

‘You can count the strikes, the Bay Bridge has four distinct towers and you can see the lightning hitting each tower.

‘I showed Sherry right away, she thought it was fantastic. We’ve never seen anything like it.’

its not striking the bridge… the bridge is sending it up, as can be observed by the fact that the lightning is thicker at the point of contact with the bridge, and dissipates into the air..

    • Anonymous

and it probably happens more than once in a lifetime too… just not when someones pointing a camera at the thing..

i dunno…. seems this reporter would get excited over a report of smoke somewhere.. that ulimately ended up being caused by a fire!

or the fact that during winter… it rained..

    • Anonymous

and i count nine “forks” not eight..

plus that exposure was over 20 seconds? ffs! so they may not have occurred simultaneously after all.. and this isnt as much a lucky shot… as it is an expected outcome..

the only thing shocking about this is the stupid hype!

this should be deleted immediately as the only purpose it could possibly serve is to make stupid people even stupider

      then again…

if sherry thought it was fantastic..

      i guess it is.

    • Ozeve

I think it’s an awesome photo and he is very lucky to have captured it. A 20 second exposure is quite normal for anyone trying to photograph lightning and yes, 20 seconds does mean that all the strikes weren’t necessarily simultaneous but still a tremendous result.

Nice Pic haven’t seen one similar . Right camera settings, right place, at the right time , hard combination to beat.

    • Anonymous

meh… obviously youre easily pleased.. havnt seen one similar? just go to google images and type in lightning ya dopey drongo.

    • Ozeve

Wow. So many critics! Just to show us how right you critics are, post a photo you’ve all taken of lightning striking an iconic bridge that you’ve taken personally so we can see just how unimpressed we SHOULD be with this one.

    • Anonymous

oi… ozeve.. its just one critic here… me .. and if you didnt have such reading comprehension issues, youd have noticed i said you can find hundreds of similar images with a simple google search.

simple being the operative word as its obvious anything more is not your forte.

    • Ozeve

I know there’s hundreds of lightning pics around Anonymous but YOU are criticizing this person’s photo without showing how YOU can do better with your camera, lightning and a bridge. “You” being the operative word here, not all the people who have photographed lightning before and put their pics on the internet. This guy may never get a lightning pic over the bridge as good as this ever again so the title is pretty accurate “Once-In-A-Lifetime Picture Of Lightning Striking Iconic Bridge.” He’ll definitely never get exactly the same photo again will he?

    • Anonymous

      again with your comprehension issues..

im not criticising this photo dufus.. im criticising the hyped up description of it..

ive pointed out that it is not a once in a lifetime shot..

it does not in fact even show lightning striking the same place twice.. as is in the article..

      the lightning isnt striking anything….

and they couldnt even count up to nine without making a mistake!

its simply not that impressive.. and the description is blatantly false.. the fact that an idiot like you thinks it is ohhh so wonderful… doesnt automatically make it so..

and not only could anyone take a better picture than this… like i said.. if you do a simple google search.. you will find that hundreds already have..

now shut up… before you make yourself look even more stupid if that is at all possible.

    • RAINSCRYPT

snarky crap for brains anon strikes again.
the only real idiot i see here is the anon with all the ludicrous criticisms. “once in a lifetime” is a figure of speech, not literal. a lightning strike refers to any lightning event making contact whether it hits an object or originates from one. examining the photo, it is difficult to tell if 9 strikes contact the bridge. one may be a strike on the other side of the bay just as at least one other, faintly visible to the right of the bridge, appears to be across the bay. also, the article does not state striking the same spot twice. it says, “…never strikes twice” which is reference to an object or person being struck twice.. not in the same spot.
i searched google for bay bridge lightning strikes and this instance is by far the most impressive i could find, and impressive enough to be highlighted on CBS news, in fact.
so, before you go calling someone an idiot, or stupid, and demanding that person should shut up, why don’t you take a look in the mirror first. who do you see? uhuh.. now hop off that shaky pedestal you’re mounted on and observe the small, cynical, ignoramus everyone else here sees. the universe certainly doesn’t revolve around you and your unwarranted, fallacious points.

    • RAINSCRYPT

      hehehe.. ;p

    • Anonymous

      fallacious points?

try counting again idiot. NINE! thats not fallacious.

      go back to watching CBS

    • RAINSCRYPT

aw, shame that your previous comment will most likely be deleted. but you should be thankful when it is. you whine like a little girl. no offense to little girls. ;p

    • Anonymous

well it was possible after all.

    • RAINSCRYPT

haha,, funny that you would accuse someone else of faulty comprehension. you don’t seem to have much of a grasp yourself. or a grip.
perhaps a nap would serve you well.. so cranky.. but enough about you. hah!
i think most would agree it is indeed a fine photo. it’s really too bad you can’t appreciate that.

    • RAINSCRYPT

ah, and so anon, unfortunately because of a poor choice of language, you got deleted. still, BIN really did you a favor by eliminating a source of embarrassment for yourself. shame though, that you can’t possibly “comprehend” why your comment should be an embarrassment to you.

    • vector theta

      Awesome shot dude!

      Just ignore the scab responses.

    • Nim

Very beautiful. Lightning strikes at the highs and lows.
