Polar Vortex: Power Outages Across America (Videos)

As the mid-west is gripped by a polar vortex of freezing temperatures, some places are losing power.

Several Illinois communities are without power on Jan. 30, 2019, one of the coldest days in state history.

Reports from power companies’ outage maps show four communities where outages are affecting large groups of people. Information listed is taken from the outage maps.

Alexis (12:20 p.m.) – 82 people are affected just west of Alexis. The outages started after 8 a.m. this morning, but the number grew after 10 a.m. The cause of the outages is not yet known, and there is no estimated restoration time. Alexis is covered by Ameren.

Thousands of homes and businesses in Central Indiana were without power as the temperatures dropped to 10 below zero in Central Indiana Wednesday morning.

The cold is intensified by winds gusting to 37 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The Indianapolis area will see wind chills of 39 below zero Wednesday.

And those winds are playing havoc with power lines, IPL spokesperson Claire Rice said.

“Tree limbs fall or brush up against the lines,” Rice said. “They can take out the lines or cause damage.”

At 10:45 a.m., about 2,400 IPL customers were without power in Marion County. Duke Energy reported about 3,800 customers, including about 2,500 in Hamilton County, have lost power throughout Indiana.

Workers were out assessing the damage, Rice said.

“We are fully staffed. Crews are out in the dangerous weather working to restore power,” Rice said.

  Over 5,000 Kansas City, MO. customers experienced a power outage Wednesday morning.

2,300 costumers were impacted in the downtown Kansas City area near Penn Valley Park and Troost Avenue. Their power has been restored according to KCP&L.

However, within the hour 1,700 customers began to experience an outage in a similar area, this time near North Hyde Park along Gillham Plaza. That outage has been fixed also.

Another 1,500 people went without power in Northern Missouri near Oxford and 700 more near Maryville.

Other areas impacted included Overland Park, Shawnee, the Northland and Grandview.

This happened as wind chills near -20 degrees were reported Wednesday morning with high temperatures only expected near 6 degrees. Clouds and a few light snow showers will be possible with a 30 percent chance for light snow.
