In the wake of a new Netflix documentary film series, questions are being raised and inquiries are being made about the death of a notable figure in American history.

On February 7, Netflix debuted its latest docuseries titled Who Killed Malcolm X? This film project is centered around the independent investigation of a historian and activist named Abdur-Rahman Muhammad. Muhammad is a Washington D.C. resident. He has identified a man he deems to be the true assassin who gunned down Malcolm X in February 1965. This information can be found on Muhammad’s website.

The new Netflix docuseries about Malcolm X’s assassination reveals previously unknown leads in this case, which were not initially followed up. Muhammad claims that his research has led him toward credible elements in this case that are worth looking into.

“There were so many stones left unturned. And it just kept bugging me and bugging me,” Muhammad said, according to Oxygen TV.

Muhammad claims that the assassin who fired the first, fatal shot that killed Malcolm X is a man who was formerly named Al-Mustafa Shabazz. Shabazz now goes by William Bradley and he lives in New Jersey. In 2015, In a 2010 blog post, Muhammad named Bradley as a co-conspirator in Malcolm X’s murder. However, Bradley responded to Muhammad’s allegations in a 2015 interview with the New York Post in which he maintained his innocence.

Malcolm X’s killing occurred in New York City. That is why the Manhattan, NY District Attorney’s Office has just made a move on this case. Netflix’s docuseries obviously prompted the downtown NYC-based bureau’s collaboration with another well-known organization in order to take action.

“District Attorney [Cyrus] Vance has met with representatives from the Innocence Project and associated counsel regarding this matter. He has determined that the district attorney’s office will begin a preliminary review of the matter, which will inform the office regarding what further investigative steps may be undertaken,” said Manhattan DA spokesman Danny Frost in a February 10 statement.

The Innocence Project’s client is Muhammad Abdul Aziz, a man with a 1966 murder conviction that ties him to the Malcolm X case. Witnesses have come forward to say that Aziz had nothing to do with the killing. They have also said he was not present at the NYC ballroom where Malcolm X was killed.

“Given the historical importance of this case and the fact that our client is 81 years old, we are especially encouraged that Mr. Vance has assigned two highly respected prosecutors, Peter Casolaro and Charles King, to work on this re-investigation,” Barry Scheck said in an official statement.

Scheck is the Innocence Project’s co-founder. He also holds the title of the organization’s special counsel. Future announcements about the official re-opening of the Malcolm X murder investigation may be coming soon.
