The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa (pictured), has said the United States of America no longer has the moral right to punish another nation on the basis of failing to adhere to democracy.

Mnangagwa said this on January 7, 2021, while speaking on the invasion of Capitol Hill by pro-Trump supporters.

He said U.S. sanctions were placed on Zimbabwe by President Donald Trump in 2020, citing concerns about Zimbabwe’s democracy.

Mnangagwa, 78, urged Trump to withdraw the sanctions his administration placed, adding that the events, which followed the recent presidential election show that America has no moral right to place such sanctions.

“Last year, President Trump extended painful economic sanctions placed on Zimbabwe, citing concerns about Zimbabwe’s democracy,” Mnangagwa’s tweet read.

“Yesterday’s events showed that the U.S. has no moral right to punish another nation under the guise of upholding democracy. These sanctions must end,” he continued.

The President also used the opportunity to congratulate President-elect, Joe Biden, on his confirmation as the 46th President of the United States.

“Zimbabwe is, as it always has been, ready to work together as friends and partners with the US for the benefit of both our peoples,” he went on to write.

Mnangagwa became the president of Zimbabwe in November 2017 after Robert Mugabe, the former president stepped down in that same year. Mugabe ran Zimbabwe’s government for 30 years.

He died on September 6, 2019 at the age of 95.
