Officials in California have approved a toxic pesticide to be used in fruit and vegetable farms throughout the state. Officials have made California the 47th state to approve a known toxin to be sprayed on our fruits and vegetables.
The pesticide, methyl iodide, will be used as a replacement for methyl bromide which has destroyed the Earth’s ozone layer.
California’s $1.6 billion strawberry industry will undoubtedly provide one of the biggest markets for the chemical, as will the Central Valley’s nut orchards and the fresh flower nurseries dotting the coast in Ventura and San Diego counties.
The pesticide is included on California’s official list of cancer-causing chemicals, and the department’s own scientific advisory panel has raised concerns that it could poison the air and water.
That’s right, strawberries from California will be laced with a pesticide that causes cancer. Why is a pesticide that is on the list of known cancer causing chemicals being approved for use on our food supply?
