US Military Making Lightning Gun

The lightning gun, as seen in games like Quake and Unreal, may no longer be a fantasy, according to recent reports. The gun uses plasma to channel high-voltage electricity through the air, creating artificial lightning. The Register says:

The Pentagon continues to pour funding into Arizona-based laser plasma lightning blaster-gun firm Applied Energetics, formerly known as Ionatron. The US Army says that the firm’s lightning guns are “approaching the level of maturity needed to begin weaponization”.

The military assessment came as the US Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (ARDEC) inked a new $3.1m deal with Applied last week.

“Now that the technology is approaching the level of maturity needed to begin weaponization we will be more closely coordinated with Applied Energetics through this contract to fulfil Army mission needs,” said Ben Lagasca, chief of “Advanced Energy Armaments” at ARDEC.

Some days I don’t know just how creeped out to feel about the Pentagon.

There are days when I’m convinced the whole thing is run by Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers series.  Not too long ago I got you some insider data on their plan to make zombie pigs in an attempt to get suspended animation for humans.  Well, now, I’ve just heard about their next plan…to MASTER LIGHTNING.

The name of the DARPA project behind this one is Project Nimbus, and it’s currently at work analyzing the mechanics of lightning, figuring out how it builds and discharges so that, hopefully, a mechanical means of doing so can be done, reliably, right down here.

Basically the military wants to build a lightning gun.

Of course, there are other applications here too, including the possibility of a ball lightning generator that can be used as a weaponized projectile.

For what it’s worth, DARPA itself says Project Nimbus is out to yield a way to permanently lightning-proof buildings and installations, so the billions of dollars in property damage and deaths can be done away with.  And it’s not just DARPA working on this, either–a company in Anderson, Indiana has developed a prototype lightning gun they call the StunStrike.  In Tucson, they’re working on one that involves short laser pulses.

So it sounds crazy, but the results may be more concrete–and more shocking–than we can believe.

This technology could possibly be used for more than just a simple gun, and may be some sort of predecessor to weather manipulation, of which the military has toyed with for years (Look up HAARP). DARPA is heading this project and wants to maybe even test this technology across the US? Check the Wired report on it:

Recently, ideas like adding iron to the ocean, or covering the Arctic with dust, have been floated in a bid stave off global warming. But the Pentagon’s also got a long track record of plotting to screw with enemy climates and improve their own operational abilities.

Now, Darpa’s got a new target for geo-hacking science, and if they can make it work, we might see modern firearms making way for weapons of the mythological variety. The out-there research agency is soliciting proposals that would harness control over “the natural mechanism of lightning initiation” by coming up with a way to launch manmade lightning bolts, and prevent or redirect natural lightning strikes — and their accompanying destruction.
