I read something several years ago that Muslim women are “forced” to veil themselves so that it will never happen again that aliens will see them as attractive.

In the historical record of human, such as the Chinese, Mayans, Greek and so, they did have myth of an advance civilization, with advance technology that the people during those can not comprehend.
Picture it this way, total global disaster, calamities, sudden cooling of earth. We the current people in the world, will need to survive when it happen, no matter how advance are our technology and communication, when a global disaster happen, we will revert to the most basic form of survival.
Going back to agriculture, image no oil and gas as refinery either are destroy or can’t get oil, those combine harvester can no longer work, so we go back to basic, and as time pass by, our only concern is the survival and the next meal, people then will abandon some technology that can not contribute to your meal tomorrow, or your survival tomorrow.
