Five U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan : Taliban

The Taliban militant group claims it has killed at least five US soldiers in Afghanistan’s eastern city of Ghazni, Press TV reports.

The militants say the soldiers were killed after an attack on their outpost on Monday. The US military has not yet confirmed the report.

The report did not provide further details about the incident.

According to the website icasualties.org, 360 foreign troops, including 277 US soldiers, have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

A total of 566 US-led forces died in Afghanistan in 2011. However, 2010 remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties, with a death toll of 711.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country, despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
