KUALA LUMPUR –
Ever since Google opened an office in Kuala Lumpur early this year, IT manager Ahmad Qaiyum has noticed a series of warning notices on websites, which proved in every case to be a false alarm.

“A red warning sign was posted against the Perdana Leadership Foundation back in February,” said the young programmer. “Perdana is a neighbor in the same building as the nonprofit that I’m with, and the techies were all puzzled after its webmaster ran multiple security checks and found no trace of infection.”
When trying to enter a Google-flagged homepage, visitors are greeted by a red card, which reads “Warning – visiting this web site may harm your computer!” The crimson label includes a graphic of a policeman.
“That wording is enough to scare away most visitors, even our staff members,” Qaiyum said. “And if the warning is not enough, then there’s the Google suggestion to ‘return to the previous page and pick another result’.”
Then, in October, the site managed by Qaiyum called criminalizewar.org was also slapped with a Google warning. Traffic dropped by nearly 400 hits a week. “Even worse, our non-profit group has been gearing up to host an international conference” Qaiyum added. “The Google warning has caused havoc for our staff, since the invited speakers, foreign guests and our many supporters are afraid to access the event publicity at our website.”
Trojan Horses Are Empty
The web manager also questioned the attached Google advisory, which states: “Of the 38 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 16 pages resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent.”
The U.S.-based company then cites source domains for the trojans, including prmbbiplyig.rr.nu, cqrpdzdx.qpoe.com and ohippoeri, myftp.info. An independent overseas IT manager, contacted by this writer, ran checks on these domains, but none were found to exist.

“I did a thorough check of all files and programs but found no viruses or trojans, nor any record of a break-in. Our dedicated server is used only by our group and it has strong firewalls,” said Qaiyum, “and so the only logical conclusion is that Google is in serious error.” His messages to the Google webmaster service center have gone unanswered.
Political Interference
Qaiyum then began to discern a pattern behind the Google alerts. His organization, the Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War, was founded by former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. So too was the Perdana Leadership Foundation, which aims to train young Malaysians to participate in parliamentary debate and promote democracy. Malaysia’s elder statesman is renowned for his outspoken defense of developing countries against economic domination by Western powers, as well as his advocacy of Palestinian rights – while opposing terrorist violence.
The Foundation gained world attention this summer with a tribunal that found former U.S. President George W. Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair guilty of war crimes in Iraq. The proceedings by a blue-ribbon panel of senior judges and law professors strictly followed the code of international jurisprudence and legal norms under Common Law.
Red Card Against Rule of Law
“The Google warning is like a red card throwing a player out of a soccer game for bad conduct,” Qaiyum protested. “The Foundation is promoting the rule of law in fairness to all, and since this is the very opposite of terrorism, it is simply wrong for a Western company to target our website.”
The very first red card was cast just before Google’s penetration of Malaysia, with a 2011 warning posted on Future Fast Forward, a news site run by Matthias Chang, a former political advisor to Dr. Mahathir during his term in high office. “If these prove to be politically motivated attacks,” Qaiyum added, “we need to find out why Google is harassing our former prime minister, one of the most respected leaders in Asia.”
Among possible reasons for Google’s mistaken warnings include:
- the timing, which coincides with a planned hearing on war crimes against Palestinians, given the close associations between Google executives, including founder Sergei Brin, with Israel’s tech sector, spun off from the Israeli Defense Forces
- a large investment in Google by financier George Soros, in his legendary grudge match with Dr. Mahathir over his hedge fund’s alleged role in triggering the 1997 Asian financial crisis. (After Soros retired as chairman, Soros Management Fund dumped its loss-making Google shares in May.)
- the track record of Google Ideas director Jared Cohen, a former State Department official who helped to incite the Arab Spring campaign
- a preemptive strike to dissuade the Southeast Asian legal community from pursuing the French court’s verdict against Google for tax evasion and illegal international transfers of its revenues.
Google’s expansion into Southeast Asia was initiated by its CEO Eric Schmidt in personal meetings with the leaders of Singapore and Indonesia. Now, however, with its many offenses against the Internet freedom of non-profit groups, Google’s red cards are bound to attract the notice of telecom regulators and law-enforcement officials across the region.
