Welfare Pays Better Than Work: New Study, Same Ideology

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Welfare pays better than “an honest day’s work” in many states, according to a new report from the right-wing-agenda Cato Institute.

The Cato calls itself a “libertarian think tank” based in Washington D.C.

“Poor people are not lazy,” says the report co-author Mike Tanner, a senior fellow with Cato.

They might very well be, however, what others would call “lazy.” Psychologists have found that “lazy” is indicative of depression. The deeper the depression, the “lazier.”

“Every survey you look at, people on welfare say they’d prefer to have a job,” says Tanner.

“On the other hand, poor people are not stupid either,” he says. “If you’re willing to pay someone two, or sometimes, three times more than they are likely to make at an entry level job, chances are they are not likely to work real hard to get into that job.”

The written summary of the report neglects to highlight that minimum wage does not provide the means for the most basic of human rights, such as safe shelter, food and clean water.

In 11 states, welfare programs pay more than the starting salary for a teacher, according to CATO.

In 39 states, welfare programs pay better than the starting salary for a secretary, according to the right-wing group’s Watchdog.org.

Tanner adds that states and the federal government should cap welfare benefits.

Creating well-paying jobs is the best way to help people get people off of welfare, Tanner acknowledges.

A person suffering from depression, however, is probably not going to snap out of the condition just because well-paying jobs have been created.

Breaking the cycle of depression and violence obviously require more than job creation.
