Daddy Yankee’s New Album Takes Reggaeton Back to Its Roots

Urban artist Daddy Yankee took part in a panel with members of the Grammy community, with whom he shared his experiences in the music industry and offered a glimpse of his return to pure reggaeton with his new disc “El Imperio Nazza: King Daddy Edition.”

The singer said his seventh production, to be launched Oct. 29, will meet his fans’ demands because it will be “the essence of reggaeton,” the style that made his name internationally.

“It’s an album with a mystic touch, a totally powerful disc for all fans who love reggaeton,” the vocalist said during an interview with Efe.

The reggaeton star described his latest launch as a “pure, raw” work, influenced by his early days but recorded “in modern times.”

Yankee, whose real name is Raymond Ayala Rodriguez, presented his new single “La Nueva y la Ex” (The New Girl and the Ex) on YouTube, with a video that showed nothing but the song lyrics but still got a million hits.

The vocalist of “Gasolina” is planning an extensive tour to promote the new album, which will be launched in digital format only – no physical discs.

“The new street where our business is done is the Internet. That’s where our fans go,” he said.

With more than 10 million discs sold, the sales strategy behind the digital format of his disc is justified by the millions of fans he has on social networks (17 million followers on Facebook and close to 6 million on Twitter).

The album with its 10 other songs includes collaborations with various colleagues, including Yandel (of the duo Wisin & Yandel), with whom he sings a duet of “Calenton.”

Daddy Yankee, nominated for two Latin Grammys for his last disc “Prestige” and his single “Limbo,” shared details of his new disc at a meeting organized by The Recording Academy, which awards the Anglo version of the Grammys.
