Amazing Off The Grid Pallet House Built For $500 (Video)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

(N.Morgan) I was very impressed with the concept of using recycled pallets, to build an off the grid house for only $500 bucks!!. At first, I thought it would be ugly and boxy, but as you can see from the pictures below, it is rather charming and dare I say, quaint? For the price and if you are in a hurry, this set up could be for you.

Reclaimed pallets can be used for constructing shelters, cabins, and homes. Building a pallet house from reclaimed pallets is an inexpensive way to build your off grid home or cabin. Get out there, get some pallets, build something!

The inspiration for the Pallet House Project came from the fact that 84% of the world’s refugees could be housed with a year’s supply of recycled American pallets. With one and a half year of pallet production in the US alone, 33 million refugees can live in a Pallet House. Nearly 21 million pallets end in landfills each year which can house over 40,000 refugees.

Pallets are specifically designed for transport and delivery – so cost is negligible when carrying shipments of food, medicine and other types of aid to refugees. A 250 square foot ‘Pallet House’ requires 100 recycled pallets nailed and lifted into place by 4-5 people using hand tools in under a week.

too bad we cant see interior. seems like it would be very dark, with few windows

I hate there liberal mind set, you can hear it in there voice BUT I do love the house and I would not mind living in one if it came to that. it is pretty cool.

    • Marika

I’m sorry, but a really “livable” version would cost more than $500. There’s no plumbing, no insulation, no windows (no glass, anyway), no kitchen facilities…it’s basically a giant doghouse with a table and a loft. I’ll take a cob house-or even a yurt-over an uninsulated chicken coop any day.

    • CrowPie

Since the ladies in the video have said this is a transitional house, it leaves many opportunities for locals to finish the house with local resources. Such as adobe or other widely available resources.

An excellent start on an age old problem.

Cool fort, but mother nature would destroy it.

    • crabby

add a few gun ports an it would be a great little zombie fort..

    • Wretched Infidel

That is so cute! I want to build one like this! thank you very much! My dream home…

    • killaguhrilla

I built a chicken coop from recycled pallets two years ago. It has withstood 100+ MPH windstorms, heavy snow, rain and massive dust storms. Do not underestimate the pallet as a building material. And in most places, you can get them for free!

Excellent idea…we have 6,000 homeless in my city

    • Time Traveller

Brilliant. Last year I was responsible for managing the first year of a 2 year project in Christchurch New Zealand a stadium built out of 3,000 blue wooden pallets. It was amazing, and i can testify that it withstood all types of weather and several hundred earthquakes. Go to http://www.palletpavilion.com to be inspired.

IAre flat roofs ilegal in Merica? Are pyramid roofs mandatory? no wonder your brains are all fried.

Awsome article, house, if you keep an eye out you get the palets for free

I think it could be modified to with stand severe weather.

Example, if you live in Florida, you would hurricane proof it with steel reinforcements in the walls.

If you live say, in Tornado Alley, you could add on a basement, under the house, or build a fruit cellar underground, in the backyard.

There are many ways to weather proof this little gem.

    • Jacksdad

You would have to sink alot of money into it to make it stand up to the elements. If you want a completely off grid shelter then it’s a good cheap idea but it would be tough living.

    • Nicole Morgan (Investigative Reporter)

I think it could be done on a budget.

$500 for the initial set up saves tons.

I’ve been told those pallets are made of strong wood.

Oak, if I’m not mistaken. They are solid and honestly, I don’t think it would take much

to make these totally weather safe and sound.

It doesn’t cost much to dig a cellar. (A true survivalist will dig it themselves. )

I’m not sure if there’s a cost for the service that marks off where the gas lines and waters lines are.

    • krb

Your right, as it stands it would be marginal in certain areas. But for a little more investment it could be a very sufficient structure. Coming from someone with building experience, I say it has lots of potential.
