Super Bowl marijuana billboard ads omit warnings (Photos)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Pro-marijuana football players have bought five billboard ads this week around MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for Sunday’s Super Bowl between two teams from the only two states that have legalized recreational marijuana.

“Broncos- and Seahawks-themed ads feature players asking why the league punishes them for using a substance that is ‘less harmful to [their] bodies than alcohol.’ Two additional ads say marijuana is also less dangerous than playing professional football,” the group Marijuana Policy Project reports.

Recently, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated that the league might be open to allowing medicinal marijuana for concussions.

The project organizers say they’ll deliver a petition with 12,000+ signatures calling on the league to stop punishing players for using marijuana.

No mention about dependency is made on the pro-legalization of marijuana group’s page or on their ads displayed to everyone this weekend, including vulnerable youth.

“Dependence on cannabis is more common among heavy users. Marijuana use can lead to increased tolerance.” (Gordon AJ, Conley JW, Gordon JM (December 2013). Medical consequences of marijuana use: a review of current literature. Curr Psychiatry Rep (Review) 15 (12): 419. doi:10.1007/s11920-013-0419-7; and Sewell RA, Poling J, Sofuoglu M (2009). “The effect of cannabis compared with alcohol on driving”. Am J Addict (Review) 18 (3): 185–93.)

Withdrawal symptoms occur when heavy users try to stop, a criteria of addiction. (Budney AJ, Roffman R, Stephens RS, Walker D (December 2007). Marijuana dependence and its treatment. Addict Sci Clin Pract (Review) 4 (1): 4–16. PMC 2797098)

No mention is made about psychotic episodes that some heavy marijauna-user individuals experience when coming down or withdrawing from today’s potent hybridized marijuana. Nor is there mention about heavy marijuana use inducing bi-polar disorder with psychotic features. (Cannabis-Induced Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features)

“[C]annabis withdrawal symptoms can occur in one half of patients in treatment for cannabis use disorders. These symptoms include dysphoric mood (anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, restlessness), disturbed sleep, gastrointestinal symptoms, and decreased appetite,” says Dr. I Danovitch in a June 2012 report, State of the art treatments for cannabis dependence.

“Most symptoms begin during the first week of abstinence and resolve after a few weeks.”

No warning is offered on the billboards about youth using marijuana being at a higher risk of dependncy and related serious problems, such as cognitive development.

“Young people are at greater risk of developing cannabis dependency because of the association between early initiation into substance use and subsequent problems such as dependence, and the risks associated with using cannabis at a developmentally vulnerable age,” Dr. J. McLauren and Dr. R. Mattick report. “In addition there is evidence that cannabis use during adolescence, at a time when the brain is still developing, may have deleterious effects on neural development and later cognitive functioning.” (See: McLaren, J, Mattick, R P., Cannabis in Australia Use, supply, harms, and responses Monograph series No. 57 Report prepared for: Drug Strategy Branch Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre University of New South Wales, Australia.)

McLaren and Mattick also show a correlation between populations suffering a mental disorder and a worsening, not bettering, of these symptoms with cannabis use.

Perhaps the above evidence-based issues at least partially explain why the league punishes football players for making the “safer” choice.

IHaving worked in the field of alcohol and other drugs harm prevention and intervention for decades, I’ve seen enough cases of marijuana-related dangerous hostile outbreaks, near loss of consciousness, brain damage and other serious side effects to know that the drug is not as harmless for many people as some say.

On the other hand, continuing to criminalize marijuana use is a criminal act itself. It feeds the insanely hungry for-profit prison-industrial complex instead of evidence-based learning opportunities, including with impacted significant others.

    • The Blizzard

You lost my interest after I read ”addiction”.

      • Deborah Dupre

It sounds like the word “addiction” troubles you. I wonder why. Thank you for reading this – well – at least part of it maybe.

      • Paul Brown

Interesting point. A growing body of neuropharmacologists are now recognizing that a number of substances commonly thought of as addictive are not automatically so, even including “crack.” Apparently there is a strong individual component, partly genetic, that determines who will become addicted to a substance.
But the components of addiction, including development of tolerance and withdrawal reactions, are present in all of us. And so far, if I understand correctly, the main indicator of danger of a person’s becoming addicted to something is whether they are already addicted to something else. Not reassuring.
Bottom line: some people are a lot more inclined to drug dependency than others, but the science isn’t clear enough for anyone to be confident they won’t become addicted. What is known is that some substances are more habit-forming or addictive than others, and some are more harmful than others – but even that is still subject to debate.

        • Deborah Dupre

” The main indicator of danger of a person’s becoming addicted to something is whether they are already addicted to something else”? Perhaps you are referring to the “addictive personality”?

What I see as the bottom line here is a very simple 2-pronged definition of addiction:

“People substance dependent are physically or psychologically dependent and that negatively affects their quality of life.”

Some marijuana users can and do develop dependency, but since its been pushed as a “natural” drug – even sacred, the dangers are over looked and that is unfair for some people, especially youth and people with pre-existing psychological problems.

The other important issue that is not receiving enough debate is whether alcohol or other drugs should be promoted by the players, idolized by youth – those most vulnerable to long-term effects.

    • Paul Brown

This strikes me as pretty biased. I realize that the ads are a new phenomenon, and therefore newsworthy, but they make legitimate points comparing the risks of football and alcohol. You might point out the lack of warnings in alcohol ads and ads for football games. That would be just as newsworthy and certainly as timely. And the documentation is overwhelming.
      Just saying.

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you for highlighting the difference between news and – well – not news.

If this was a commentary, I’d be happy to point to alcohol and other drugs being pushed at family gatherings being less than healthy.

Youth idolize those players. This drug advertising specifically relate the players to the drug. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this aspect of the campaign?

    • desertspeaks

No mention is made about psychotic episodes that some marijauna-addicted individuals experience when coming down or withdrawing from today’s potent hybridized marijuana.????????????
That has got to be the biggest load of LIES I’ve ever seen!!! psychotic marijuana users??
The only person who lies more than those propping up the LIES are those who tell them!!!
IF the war on drugs was won tomorrow, what happens to the dea? all the shiny new prisons that have been built?? the courts, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys??
THEY ALL GO OUT OF BUSINESS!
there is ZERO INCENTIVE TO WIN THE WAR ON DRUGS!!! There is simply too much money being made by keeping it illegal!!!

      Deaths from war? BILLIONS
Deaths from alcohol? tens/hundreds of millions
      deaths from tobacco? BILLIONS
      Deaths attributed to marijuana? ZERO!
      NOW STFU!!!!!!

      • Deborah Dupre

Apparently you missed part of the story and also, my earlier comment about the prison-industrial-complex. Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel more like doing so.

I totally get the fake war on drugs, believe me.

Yes, psychotic episodes in marijuana withdrawal. Perhaps I could have more accurately stated, “Cannabis-Induced Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features.”

“Clinicians agree that cannabis use can cause acute adverse mental effects that mimic psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.” (See: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2811144/)

      • Paul Brown

I’m afraid all your numbers are way off, but the war on drugs is certainly a sham, for the reasons you mention and more.
As for marijuana-induced psychosis, it’s real, as is alcohol-induced psychosis. I’ve seen both, in my personal and professional life.
You may want to see someone about your anger problem.

      SPORTS!!!
The only thing that comes to mind is…

“Break out the Gladiators, the peasants stir and need superficially appeased!

      ——-
In modern usage, the phrase is taken to describe a populace that no longer values civic virtues and the public life. To many, it connotes a supposed triviality and frivolity that characterized the Roman Republic prior to its decline into the autocratic monarchy characteristic of the later Roman Empire’s transformation about 44 B.C

      • Deborah Dupre

Agreed – really brings out the best of people, eh?

More violence to negatively influence the masses – including children and youth.

More opportunity to teach competition instead of cooperation for a better world.

Thank you for reminding us about these important aspects at the heart of “competitive sports”, Leda.

    • Idiot Proof

All of these comments claiming cannabis addiction, psycho

      • Deborah Dupre

Never seen a marijuana dependent individual have hostile outbreak when coming down and unable to get a hit, eh?

Or is it you never noticed the direct correlation when you did see it?

    • Idiot Proof

All of these comments claiming cannabis addiction, psychosis, and other negative and ill effects, are complete bullcrap, and sounds like common drivel from ignorant morons showpiece stuff they read, written by other ignorant morons…

      • Deborah Dupre

I beg your pardon. Have you researched this topic at a graduate school level and worked in the filed picking up the pieces (that attitudes/opinions like yours foster) for decades? I seriously doubt it.

I have. I also know denial is the toughest obstacle when managing or attempting to manage one’s own dependency – be it regarding recreational chemicals or those the nation’s addicted to as seen in the defense of the petrochemical-military-industrial-complex.

Here’s a challenge for you Mr/Mrs Idiot: Visit an alcohol and other drug treatment facility and watch as police or loved ones bring cannabis-dependent folks in. Visit each day for a week – if those you see on day 1 make it that long. Then, please come back and report – if you can stomach what you see and report honestly. Deal?

    • Paul Brown

Keep up your good work, Ms Dupre. For every one of the dittoheads, there are dozens who appreciate your articles, learn from them, and don’t even bother to read the silly comments.
For my part, I never used to read comments either, until I realized that providing your readers clear facts was worth the time. There are always some open-minded readers whose opinions can be swayed by facts and reason, and in these times, we need as many of those as possible.
I hope other factually informed readers, who do their own homework, will pitch in to refute the undocumented nonsense.
Otherwise, as one of your commenters remarks, it’s bread (and drugs) and circuses to keep the people from rising up and taking back their decaying empire.
This time, the sinking ship is much bigger than the Roman Empire. It’s our entire species.

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you Mr. Brown for your encouragement and dialogues participation. Reading some comments helps me understand just why the ship is sinking – human extinction, that is.

I can see why so many people hope aliens will save them. Our own species is surely doing a poor job. Then again, maybe we need more of those people of goodwill helping solve issues here on this planet rather than concentrating good energy out in space?

    • goodbees

There have been to my knowledge no affirmed cases of marijuana users experiencing anything like psychotic episodes during use or during the withdrawal period. There is withdrawal but it is mild, comparable more to caffeine withdrawal than say alcohol or nicotine.

As far as bipolar goes, if it is present afterward it was most likely present before hand and marijuana was being used to curb or eliminate the symptoms.

Sounds like more bs propaganda to me. Should kids be encouraged to smoke anything? No, of course not, however kids should not be consuming caffeine either IMO.

    • FarmerX

I been smoking pot for 24 years and I’m not addicted , lol!

Marijuana is not a dangerous addictive substance. The only danger it presents is that it is an eye opening entheogen. Without the influence of marijuana I might have ended up a slack jawed idiot or a homicidal maniac.

Marijuana was the first substance I used that caused me glaring introspective insight and brought about my understanding that the government lies to us about many, many things. I didnt die, I didnt freak out, I enjoyed a nice evening with my friends. The veil was lifted and I saw life for what it really was.

      It was far out man.

    • RMS

This is just more “old school reefer madness”, and frankly it’s getting old.
The pro-marijuana billboards are not promoting legal marijuana for “minors” use, no more than the Bud commercials televised during football games do.
For anyone “not-in-the-know”, marijuana is readily available in most any public school. I have 3 kids who have graduated high school in the last few years, who have told me so.
So, the debate about legalizing marijuana putting our youth at risk, is mute.

This article uses many half-truths and innuendos linking marijuana to mental illness, quoting “studies”, that if you carefully read the results, are very vague at the least.

One study, “State of the Art Treatments for Cannabis Dependence” says there is no actual treatment for the “9%” of cannabis users who develop a dependency, except the usual therapy sessions, and they push psychotropic drugs which are known for their dangers.
One commenter below says she has seen “marijuana related hostile outbreaks”
Really? A couple of the side-effects of marijuana quoted by the above study are “euphoria and and relaxation”.
Yep, pot users would rather sit on the couch and munch out on goldfish crackers, watching TV. Mellow yellow.
On the other hand, a drunk, a meth user, or someone on coke, will be violent and raise hell.

Another study this article quotes, “Cannabis-Induced Bi-polar Disorder with Psychotic Features” is from a group that touts the flu vaccine as being safe and necessary to prevent the flu.
Yep, you can trust them for sure.

What this debate, and this article in particular fail to address is the fact that people who develop problems with cannabis, have many other problems as well.
Ever seen someone mix anti-depressives and alcohol? That’s some scary stuff.
Nothing is mentioned of the casual recreational user, like the casual alcohol drinker who will never develop any problems at all.
      Why?

A quote from this article says, dependence on cannabis is more common among heavy users.
Really? Is that like saying an alcoholic is more dependent on alcohol than a casual drinker? Or a cigarette chainsmoker is more dependent on tobacco than a light casual smoker?
Marijuana use can lead to increased tolerance? Increased tolerance to what? Marijuana?
Does that mean an alcoholic can tolerate more alcohol than a casual drinker?
A heavy chain smoker can tolerate more smoke than a casual light smoker?

Who was it that said, “you can fool some of the people some of the time, but the rest you just jerk off”? This is a jerk off.

When it comes to alcohol and tobacco use, the detrimental health effects have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, but when it comes to marijuana use, it’s still speculation and up for debate, why?
All those opposed to legalizing marijuana can claim, are things that have nothing to do with the real core of the subject, but distract instead.

The fact is, some people have “addictive personalities” and can become addicted to gambling, sex, the internet, drinking, smoking, picking their nose, etc., etc.
I myself, an ex-smoker, had this habit for over 20 years. When I decided to quit, I didn’t need counselling, anti-depressives, patches, gums, etc. I just quit, period.

Marijuana has been found, and continues to be found to have beneficial health and medicinal effects.
It’s about time that we abandon the old school reefer madness mentality and see the benefits of this natural God given plant, and put to rest those who demonize it, as well as, the pharmaceutical industrial complex and their cronies who create syndromes and disorders so they can push their poisons upon us.
      They are the real danger.

      • Deborah Dupre

Thank you for reading this and for your lengthy comment. This topic surely seems to hit a nerve with you, perhaps so much that it was not really read or jus not read carefully.

Firstly – where did I write anything about the ads “promoting legal marijuana for “minors” use”? Please look again. I diid not say such a thing. I did write about it being irresponsible to associate players that youth idolize e with drugs. In this case, the news is about associating them with marijuana – in which studies show the chemicals impair youth brain development.

I should also mention that people dependent on marijuana are often multi-drug users. Nevertheless – do you really think promoting any type of drug at family outings and ads directly linking drugs to youth’s idols is healthy, responsible, and wise?

    • Celt

Nothing has been proven about cannabis being harmful… Dangerous harmful outbreaks what quackery… Its been used for thousands of years by priests to open their minds… The op should try it …

      • Paul Brown

Amazing how hot under the collar you pot users get. So much for mellow. Sheesh. Calm down now.

But please don’t get me wrong, I am all for legalization, not just decriminalization, of pot. Smoking it produces a lot of the same carcinogens as tobacco, but what the hell, better than the so-called war on drugs.

As a matter of fact, there is plenty of literature on the harmful effects of cannabis – just check PubMed. They’re not earth-shattering compared to a lot of other drugs, but they’re real. And the occasional, not too frequent, bad reactions are real too – maybe less common than alcohol, but more than tobacco (Never heard of a psychotic reaction to tobacco). You can indulge in all the conspiracy theories about scientific research you like, but it sure beats the alternative – pop mythology.

I too smoked pot for 20 years, and found I could quit once I didn’t have any around the house. I was also able to quit tobacco (cold turkey) and alcohol. Alcohol was the most difficult. So what? Dependency depends, if you’ll pardon the expression, on the user.

For most people, cannabis is undoubtedly far less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. That wasn’t the point of this article or comments cautioning about occasional harmful effects.

As for God given? Religion has done more damage than any drug, in my opinion, and the use of drugs in religion is a way of getting people hooked on the real opiate, as Marx would say.

        • ezwatchman337

If you read Marx’s poetry then you would also see that he is telling you to sell your soul to Satan for fame and fortune

      • Deborah Dupre

Glad you bring up the subject of “priests.”

Do you really think the majority of pot users are trained in priesthood disciplines that would lend to the opening of the mind – and not just a drug?

Or is this “sacred use” of drugs often cited just an excuse to blow your mind, get high or “relax” – actually nothing to do with the sacred, spirit, or health?

    • Don't be hating!

Dam this lady is dumb..All she sees is MONEY/POWER! Who cares if your child steals grandma hidden marijuana stash and gets high. This is all aimed to dumified the sheep even more. Now you will have marijuana drivers on the road as much as drunk drivers. When does it end with GREED. POLITICIANS are all EVIL OCCULT SANTANIC LUNATICS>
