Israel strikes Syrian army targets after border blast; one dead

Israel hits several Syrian military and security targets that ‘enabled and aided’ Tuesday’s attack on IDF troops which left four Israeli soldiers wounded, IDF Spokesman says.

IDF forces struck a number of Syrian military and security targets connected to the blast that injured four Israeli soldiers on Tuesday, the IDF Spokesman said early on Wednesday.

The attack killed one person and wounded seven others, Syria’s armed forces said, warning that the attacks endangered stability in the region.

The targets, which included military headquarters, artillery batteries and a training base belonging to the Syrian military, “enabled and aided in the carrying out of [Tuesday's] terror attacks,” the statement read. “The IDF retains the right to act in any way and at any time it sees fit to protect the citizens of Israel.”

The strikes were carried out in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights, the spokesman said.

Israeli security forces have the capability to carry out military operations in virtually every part of the globe, including Iran, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz said Wednesday, adding that Israel had already conducted dozens of covert operations in foreign and enemy countries.

“Our Air Force is wherever we want it to be,” Gantz said during a discussion with students in Gan Yavneh. The discussion was recorded and broadcast by Channel 10 News.

 “I did not even mention the dozens of secret activities, some of which took place last week, and just as we speak,” he said. ”I am talking about close range operations and long-range ones, such as Iran. These are not areas that are beyond the IDF’s reach.”

The Channel 10 report asserted that Gantz’s comments represented the first “definitive” acknowledgment that Israel is capable of military intervention in Iran and constituted a hint from the chief of General Staff that this kind of activity was already happening.
