Witnesses’ and Wounded Workers’ Statements

Death and destruciton in Ewing Township occurred Tuesday after PSE&G received a call around 11:45 a.m. advising that a contractor damaged a methane gas line, according to spokeswoman Lindsey Puliti. Crews had been working on the gas line about an hour when it ignited and exploded in the South Fork development on Crockett Lane in Ewing Township.

The body of one victim, a resident, was on top of a car parked very close to the explosion sight. Seven injuries are reported. Five of the injured work for PSE&G. Th other two work for Henkels and McCoy contractors. One of those injured has been identified: 49-year-old Anthony Alvin, a backhoe operator. One home was leveled, 10 totally demolished, and 55 condo units damaged.

“[It was] a huge explosion, like a bomb. A house was in flames, gas workers were laying out with legs broken, arms broken, gashes,” Marsha Brown described on Action News.

“It shook me to my core… Never seen anything like this,” Brown said.

“It’s real difficult. It’s real difficult. We don’t know. We tried to go. I still got a dog. I couldn’t even go pick up my dog,” said Robert Johnson.

“We keep putting it into perspective. It’s bad, but it could be so much worse,” said Matthew Ianni.

“It was just unreal,” he said. Emergency crews responded “really fast.”

“There was debris everywhere, people were out here hurt, people were on the ground. Some were PSE&G workers,” said Robert Negrone, who approached some of the injured workers to try to help.

“‘Get away! The gas lines are all connected,” the wounded on the ground heroically warned.

Fossil Fuel Collateral Damage Report

Chairman of the hospital’s surgery department, Dr. Louis D’Amelio provided updates on the wounded.

  • The second gentleman has mild abdominal injuries and a concussion.
  • The third gentleman is still being evaluated and appears to have a concussion and soft tissue injuries.
  • Four people have been admitted for treatmen.
  • Three others have been released.

People who tried to go home were turned blocked and guided to the Red Cross, who’d just set up an emergency center at the West Trenton Fire Houseand when traumatized residents began arriving.

It’s not yet known what sparked the explosion.

Update: March 4, 2014, 6:30 ET - NJ Massive Methane Explosion

NJ Massive Methane Explosion Update: Death, Destruction, Story Changes

New Jersey’s methane gas blast in Ewing Township has claimed the life of one person and injured at least seven others, workers for Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G).

The methane gas explosion “occurred after PSE&G utility workers responded to a report of a smell of gas in the air,” reported the New York Daily News.

One resident died and at least seven workers were injured, police said at a 5 p.m. news conference.

An explosion sparked by an unknown cause in Mercer County, N.J. blew at least one home into smithereens and killed a resident before sparking a major fire that damaged 55 surrounding condos, according to police.

PSE&G utility workers and contractors “responded to the smell of gas in the air just before noon when the explosion blasted a complex of condos on Crockett Ln.”, according to Lt. Ron Lunetta of the Ewing Township Police Department at the news conference.

Earlier, a different story was reported, as also seen in this Update thread below in which it was stated that a methane gas line was struck:

“At least seven workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” the police said.

A body was discovered “some area away from the blast” around 5:15 p.m., Lt. Lunetta said at a press conference.

Police have yet to release the identity of the dead resident.

NJ Massive Methane Explosion: At Least 7 Injured, 1 Critically, Hospitals In Disaster Mode, Blood Call

Police say at least 7 people have been injured in an explosion and subsequent fires in New Jersey today.

Injured have been identified only as 5 PSE&G gas workers and 2 contractors.

Note: The Community Blood Council of New Jersey has put out a call for blood donors.

The explosion occurred just off I-95 at 28 Crockett Lane in the South Fork housing community around 1 p.m.

“The fact that I got blown off my feet from 50 feet away,” said one local, “…there’s gotta be some injuries,”

It was a “huge explosion, like a bomb,” another neighborhood resident, Marsha Brown, said. “A house was in flames, gas workers were laying out with legs broken, arms broken, gashes.”

Chopper 3 was over the scene by 1:30 p.m. A large plume of smoke was visible in the sky near the area and flames were seen shooting from a home appearing to have been leveled in the explosion. Debris was seen scattered throughout the area, including in trees and on rooftops of nearby homes.

Other nearby dwellings were on fire where residents were evacuated andtaken to the West Trenton Fire House at 40 W. Upper Ferry Road.

At least seven people were injured in the blast, many of which are burns. They were taken to local hospitals.

The Associated Press reported two of the injuries are said to be “traumatic,” one of whom is in critical condition.

Hospitals in the area are reportedly in disaster mode, and medics from as far as Bucks County are responding to the scene.

The Community Blood Council of New Jersey has also put out a call for blood donors.

Eyewitness News reporter Cleve Bryan arrived on-scene around 1:45 p.m. as several ambulances were leaving.

Witnesses said the explosion was incredibly loud and blew off doors and windows of nearby homes.

One man, identified as Matt, said he heard the explosion and suffered an injury to his hand.

“I was getting off my couch … I got up, and there’s was just this very loud explosion,” he said. “Right after that, my front door — glass door — got shattered. And I kinda flew back … from the explosion.”

“The house [that exploded] was completely engulfed,” a woman told Bryan. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was devastating.”

She saw several people staggering around in shock and others on the ground with injuries.

PSE&G crews quickly shut off the gas and electricity. Around 2:15 p.m., the company released a statement on the explosion that said a contractor was on the scene working on the line when it became damaged and then ignited.

Think of a world without fossil fuels, and with renewable energy instead.
      Now do it.
Start with your own home, business, and local government, one solar panel at a time if necessary.
      Elect like-minded third party candidates.
      Join direct action.
Boycott the big corporations, support local farmers and businesses.

    • IBelieve

Great advice, Paul, Brown, but my area has no more local farmers or local businesses. Everywhere I drive I see “closed” signs.

And the local sellers of organic foods are being put out of business also.

Here in Florida just recently a woman was taken to court because she was
living “off the grid”. Judge declared she was not allowed to do it!!!!

That’s happening more and more. In Oregon, a man was penalized for collecting rainwater.

The whole world is going to pieces.
