Subject: What is WD-40 ?

WD-40 ~ Who knew!

I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup.
I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason).
I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news.
He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do  probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open.
Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off.
It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I was impressed!

WD-40 who knew?
“Water Displacement #40″.
The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.
WD-40 was created in 1953, by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.
Its name comes from the project that was to find a ‘Water Displacement’ Compound.
They were finally successful for a formulation, with their fortieth attempt, thus WD-40.
The ‘Convair Company’ bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts.
Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.

When you read the ‘shower door’ part, try it.
It’s the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door.
If yours is plastic, it works just as well as on glass.
It’s a miracle!
Then try it on your stove-top.
It’s now shinier than it’s ever been.
You’ll be amazed.

WD-40 Uses:
1. Protects silver from tarnishing.
2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
4. Gives floor that ‘just-waxed’ sheen without making them slippery.
5. Keeps the flies off of Cows, Horses, and other Farm Critters, as well. (Ya gotta love this one!!!)
6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7. Removes lipstick stains.
8. Loosens stubborn zippers.
9. Untangles jewelry chains.
10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terracotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.
17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on both home and vehicles doors.
18. It removes that nasty tar and scuff marks from the kitchen flooring. It doesn’t seem to harm the finish and you won’t have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19. Remove those nasty bug guts that will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly!
20. Gives a children’s playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21. Lubricates gearshift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.

30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31. Removes grease splatters from stove-tops.
32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
37. Florida’s favorite use is: ‘cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.’
38. The favorite use in the state of New York, it protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it’s a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose.
Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.
40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
41. It is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray it on the marks and wipe with a clean rag.
42. Also, if you’ve discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!
43. If you spray it inside a wet distributor cap, it will displace the moisture, allowing the engine to start.

P.S.
As for that Basic, Main Ingredient…….
Well…. it’s FISH OIL….

Now This Is Definitely Worth SHARING!!

absence of evidence is not evidence of absence

Your uses for WD-40 are much appreciated and certainly interesting. However WD-40 does not contain fish oil, its exact formula is unknown but it is for sure a derivative of hydrocarbon. According to WD-40′s website the Fish oil is actually a myth. I’m not trying to put you down. I just don’t want anyone trying to eat the stuff as it is not naturally based.

Link to the page that information is contained on.

It’s mainly Stoddard Solvent, or “Varsol” and Mineral Oil….

Fish oil…LOL. Such claims are put out there to discredit those who don’t bother checking their facts.

Took me less than a minute to find out. Probably about as long as the first commenter.

Yeah, I saw that and laughed. I also laughed at number 39, as this MYTH of being a fish lure is tied to the lie of it being based in fish OIL, which it is not. There are several videos out there showing that it will NOT lure a single fish up to take a bite, and that it is in fact, a sheening hydrocarbon derivative.

It works good for what it is meant for, but at the same time, there are many other chemicals that are better are most of it’s ‘claimed uses’ (PB Blaster is a better penetrant oil, Windex with Vinegar cleans glass far better, and sprayed on a car dash made from plastic, it will cause polymer shrinkage as it dries and result in a cracked dash due to sunlight and heat within a period of a year or so).

Great urban legend article though. Shame you can’t be held financially liable for it.

      • anonymoustache

        Whatever it was before,
        it’s been changed now.

It doesn’t burn like it did before and you can’t use it for helping to start gas engines
        like it used to.

        • John

hold a can to a lit lighter and tell me it doesn’t burn anymore…it will shoot out like a flame thrower…so many know it all’s who know phuckall

        • ablinkin

Not flammable enough for gas engines, but it works great for starting diesel engines!

      • Ambicatus

i put it on my high carbon springsteel swords, and then they never ever rust

        • Ambicatus

          later in the Ragnarok,.,,,

    • Shorty

I was an ugly cuss most of my life…I sprayed WD 40 all over myself and now I only date super models…Thanks Military Industrial Complex and Corvair!

        • IMC

When used as aftershave or cologne WD-40 literally makes panties fall off everywhere I go.

      • RBRYAN18801

Are you serious about the psoriasis cure? A good friend has it bad and tried everything. I am not going to tell him about it unless you have personally viewed the change. I would not want to get his hopes up.

        Thanks

        • Bossmanrocks

I think he was being sarcastic. Don’t use it for that.

        • David Mushbraine

I know someone that was getting some cream stuff from india that was made of herbs and they told me it was the only thing that worked for psoriasis. I wish I could remember what it was called. It was VERY expensive though. Like $80 for a weeks worth expensive. Maybe you can find it on the interwebs.

      • Anday

I just tried it on my Willy and it did not work :(

It actually stings – *alot*. Not recommended.

    • Anonymous

Someone spray some on Obama maybe it will get his brain working.

      • Anonymous

You obviously haven’t done your research as-hole, it was Bush that had the lowest IQ of ANY sitting President in our history!!!!!

        • RJ

You can’t provide any evidence of Obama’s intelligence. ALL of his school records are sealed. I would agree he has to be intelligent in order to do this much damage to the nation.

          • Mad Mex

I guess you are aware that 50% of the American population are below average intelligence..?

    • No time

What about skid marks in your under ware? Will it work on this nasty little problem?

      • duncombemu

        Just ware Brown undies.

      • MSG Chicken

Hey, there is this thing called toilet paper. They come in rolls and sold at Wal-mart real cheap. Just tell the clerk you are looking to get rid of “skid marks” and they will point you to that aisle that sells Lysol, but don’t go there, instead look at the paper section in the Household department right next to it.

You’re welcome! Are you from the Sumo club, BTW?

      • John

what about spelling….will it help this idiot to learn the word underwear

      • RJ

Pantie liners soaked in WD-40 work best.

    • craig

Great artical. When I saw the headline I had to read it because this happened to me yesterday. My wife had been having trouble starting her car because the key would not turn unless you jingled it or messed with for about 10 minutes. I took the car to the dealer and was told I needed a new key switch assy. They gave me a price of $500 and said it would be a week before the could do it. When I got home I was in my garage and noticed a can of WD-40. I thought what the heck. So I sprayed it deep into the key hole. I put the key in and out several times and black gook ran out of the key hole. The key works like a charm and thanks to WD-40 saved me $500 bucks. True story for real!!!!

    • Bossmanrocks

Wonder if it will take spray paint off of plastic?

    • BuelahMan

WD-40 is a no-no in factory automation. It is advertised as a lubricant, when it really is a cutting fluid. After extended use in factory equipment, it causes gumming and more problems than it is worth.

It certainly is NO fish oil.

    • greenghost

It cleaned the tar off my hands real good when I was patching a roof and got some on my hands.

    • ez

It also keeps fire ants away. Spray around perimeter of house to keep them out. Spray on your shoes and bottom pants legs when working in the garden or yard.

    • westside prepper

Here’s one no one will believe till they try it,I was on lake Erie and fish wasn’t hitting but the fish finder said they was there the caption said take wd40 lightly spray the fishing leir fish will bite but will let go quick so you have to be ready for a quick yank’to make a long story short we got a lot of perch that day so don’t forget WD 40 for your tackle box IT WORKS

      • John

what’s a leir in fishing…never heard of one of them before

    • Ailurophile
    • SGde3a

Definetly not fish oil….. Fish oil is available in spray cans. It smells terrible, but does displace water and it leaves a primer-like coating. Arguably better long term…

    • Lucifer

      AWESOME!!

    • Synickel

The uses for WD-40 that are better left to silicone or something else are lubing anything that will thereafter be exposed to dust or dirt. The WD-40 ends up gumming up with the dust/dirt and ending up worse than before.

    • DRAUGR

Whenever I find a hole where a carpenter bee has drilled itself into part of my house, I stick the little plastic tube in the hole and pump it full of WD-40. That’s the last hole that little f@#$#! drills in my house or anyone elses.

    • Dark London

Please check some of your facts!

      from the WD40 website:

      Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
      Fact:
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

      “WD-40 Cures Arthritis!” No Way.

      Myth: WD-40 cures arthritis.
      Fact:
This popular headline, appearing at least once a year in the tabloids, is completely FALSE. WD-40 Company does not recommend the use of WD-40 for medical purposes, and knows no reason why WD-40 would be effective for arthritis pain relief. WD-40 contains petroleum distillates and should be handled with the same precautions for any product containing this type of material.

      there are more…

    • jayabhai

One of the best uses of WD-40 is on the bed bugs. Once our bedrooms were infected with these horrible bugs and since we had little children, we could not use strong insecticides while we could not get rid of them with mild dosages. As a last resort, we used WD-40 and with one spray treatment on the beds they were all dead, every last one of them, including the eggs! Very effective. (it is not to be sprayed into the air, but on to the bed’s joints and into the holes and wherever you think the bugs can hide, using the small red tube which comes with the can).

Now we keep a can of WD-40 in the kitchen and spray it on any crawling insects including cockroaches and is extremely effective. Make sure it does not come in contact with fire since it is very dangerous. We do not use any type of insecticides inside our home.

    • Anonymous

OMG!!! PLEASE PLEASE check you facts WD40 is mostly KEROSINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! look it up its a total myth its fish oil DO NOT PUT THIS ANYWHERE NEAR ANYTHING YOU MIGHT INGEST
and personally i wouldn’t even consider getting on my skin ,
i suggest before you post something like this you spend 2 mins checking your so called “facts” you may actual harm someone did you think of that?

    • chefjim

It also works a treat on GOUT. I have gout in my big toes and when it REALLY flares up, I spray some WD-40 on them and it really works. I don’t do it often, only when gout attack is unbearable. I’m not sure of its toxic effects on the liver (but I guess I could research it.)

    • GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN

Wow not often i learn something new that i can actually use here. thanx
