Russian forces are training militants in Moldova’s disputed Transnistria region, which borders with west Ukraine. The military activity was confirmed by Russia’s defence ministry, who said that 400 Russian commandos were coaching Transnistrian soldiers.
Ukraine maintains tight control of the shared border given the presence of hundreds of Russian soldiers in Transnistria. With Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa just a short distance away, there are fears Moscow could use Transnistria as a launchpad for an attack.
