Blaze engulfs Dubai skyscraper near world’s tallest building

At least 20 stories of a 5-star Dubai hotel became engulfed in flames as the city was preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with 16 people receiving injuries. Firefighters are currently battling the fire at the 302-meter tall Address Downtown Dubai.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which covered at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper. Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene.

New Year celebrations around the world were going ahead despite heightened terror fears Thursday — as New York deployed 6,000 police officers to Times Square and Belgium charged a 10th suspect over the Paris massacre.

High-profile attacks claimed by ISIS and other groups in 2015, and a general unease about safety and security, cast a shadow over traditional public gatherings in cities across the globe.

In Times Square, the expected one million revelers will be guarded by a beefed-up security force this year, including hundreds of officers carrying long guns, radiation detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs.

Breaking News From Germany: 

Police in Munich, Germany, evacuated two train stations Thursday night — including the city’s main station — because of a terrorist threat, police told NBC News.

“Due to existing information which we take highly seriously, there is an attack planned tonight,” police said.

No details of the threat were provided. Police told NBC News that the main Munich Hauptbahnhof and Pasing stations were evacuated and that they were urging people not to gather in crowds.

Eyewitnesses told Sky News that firefighters’ access is complicated by structure and crowds.

Civil defense representative said that all residents have been evacuated, and people are being moved out of the Dubai Mall located nearby.
