Astronomers have discovered a binary system consisting of a failed star, also known as a brown dwarf, and the remnant of a dead star known as a white dwarf.

One of the properties that makes this binary so remarkable is that the orbital period of the two objects is only 71.2 minutes. This means that the speeds of the stars as they orbit each other are about 100 km/sec (a speed that would allow you to travel across the Atlantic in less than a minute). Using five different ground-based telescopes across three continents, the team was able to deduce that this binary system consists of a failed star with a mass of about 6.7% that of the Sun (equivalent to 67 Jupiter masses) and a white dwarf that has a mass of about 40% of the sun’s mass. They have also determined that the white dwarf will begin cannibalizing the brown dwarf in less than 250 million years making this binary the shortest-period pre-cataclysmic variable ever to have been discovered.

The Taurids meteor shower peaks every October and November, producing a relatively small display of shooting stars as the planet passes through its stream.

The hot white dwarf star had originally been identified by SDSS as WD1202-024 and was thought to be an isolated star. The fact that it is actually a member of a very close 71-minute binary was announced by Dr. Lorne Nelson of Bishop’s University at the semi-annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, TX on June 6th (see the link on the right for a concatenated version of the webcast of the press conference).

Meteor shower displays happen when tiny bits of cosmic debris enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up in the sky. Because the Taurids are made up of branches and a core, activity levels increase and decrease depending on how much debris Earth passes through.

Scientists have found these ones. There may be more rocks hidden in the stream, which could have even bigger asteroids. The astronomers are now looking forward to find these rocks and determine if they are indeed on a collision course with the Earth.

Czech scientists analysed 144 fireballs from a recent meteor shower and warned that the risk of a sizeable asteroid hitting the Earth is significantly growing every few years.

The Taurid meteor shower showed significantly enhanced activity in 2015. This was due to a well-defined orbital structure, researchers found.

Researchers from the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences showed that a “new branch” of Taurids contains at least two asteroids of the size 200-300 metres.

Since it is likely that numerous of undiscovered asteroids of decameter or even larger size are present as well, impact hazard increases significantly when the Earth encounters the Taurid new branch every few years, researchers said.

The asteroids are very fragile, but when they are this large they may penetrate deep into the atmosphere and pose a real threat of collision with Earth, it added.
The study urges further research to obtain “a better description of this real source of potentially hazardous objects large enough to cause a local or even continental disaster.”
