Kirk: “In the day prior to Hurricane Andrew, Everglades Labor Camp had 400 trailers and approximately 300 residents. In the day after Hurricane Andrew, there were fewer than six trailers standing, surrounded by approximately 50 acres of bent and twisted metal.”
Steven Kirk is president of Rural Neighborhoods, a nonprofit that provides housing to migrant workers in south Florida.

It is life living on the flood plain, a risk taken when homeowners bought houses in a city with a Port. It is not Biblical. of course I have a different point of view since our homes in Cheshire tend to be built on the last story which sank down to subsidence with Brine extraction. Including mine. If you dont want the problem, buy property where the builder has elevated the building from a floodplain or expect a large bill later. At least I am 54 meters above sea level, but Northwich has both subsidence and flooding every 5 – 10 years to which it has adapted over 500 years.
Building on raised dirt embankments is a lot cheaper than a new house and perhaps a 3 story building with the ground floor used for garage and whatever you dont mind losing is a better idea than having to cart the sofa and household furniture upstairs. Some go for waterproof shutters but whatever you do anything is better than obeying building codes which ban brick buildings and force all timber construction unless you are boat building and dont mind becoming a cinder later.
