Flint's Water Contamination Is Minor-League Compared to the Rest of the US, Study Reveals (Videos)

By N. Morgan

A recent CDC investigation discovered that Flint, Michigan ranks nowhere near the top when it comes to lead in the water, thousands of areas are far worse.

For years there has been a heated and ongoing debate about the levels of lead that have been found in the drinking water in Flint, Michigan, however this current study concluded that water conditions are just as contaminated in many other areas throughout the country.

Reuters recently published neighborhood-level blood lead testing results from 34 states, as well as Washington DC, which were collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The results uncovered that 3,810 neighborhood areas have levels of lead that are at least double those seen in Flint. Close to half of these sites had levels that were actually four times as high as those in Flint.

The areas of Pennsylvania, New York, Baltimore and parts of Ohio were shown to suffer the more severe affects of contamination.

Researchers noted that areas which were heavily industrialized before lead was recognized as a problem have become hotspots for contamination.

A color-coded map identifying many of these hotspots was published with the report, showing some of the highest levels of contamination in Savannah, Georgia; Brooklyn, New York; and even as far north as Rutland, Vermont.

The results also revealed that despite the fact that Flint had become the face of lead contamination in America, it doesn’t even rank among the most toxic water supplies in the country.

Far from being a localized problem, it seems that water supplies throughout the entire country could be compromised.

In 2013, prior to the Flint controversy, The American Society of Civil Engineers gave the nation’s water infrastructure a “D+” on their Report Card for America’s Infrastructure in 2013.

It is estimated that the much-needed overhaul of the country’s water infrastructure could cost well over $1 trillion.

“Restoring existing water systems as they reach the end of their useful lives and expanding them to serve a growing population will cost at least $1 trillion over the next 25 years,” a 2012 American Water Works Association (AWWA) report concluded.

Despite their desperate need, residents of Flint are still waiting on drinkable water, so it does not seem likely that any of these other areas will see help anytime soon.

Just this week it was reported that Flint is still in negotiations for a long-term water contract while the city’s residents are still waiting on clean drinking water.

Outspoken environmental activist Erin Brockovich predicted this scenario would begin to unfold as more research was conducted. Brockovich is best known for building a case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California in 1993.

Since then she has been a world-renowned environmental activist and has even had a movie made about her activism, starring Julia Roberts.

Speaking in an interview last year, Brockovich said, “I can tell you that Flint, Michigan is the tip of the iceberg. I can tell you for certain that this is a national crisis that we are not getting ready to face. The crisis is already here. Even since Flint has hit the national stage, we’ve found out that Sebring, Ohio has the same problem …

The same thing is happening in Louisiana, and we’re just now hearing rumors—I haven’t verified it before I came out—we’re having the same situation in Wisconsin.”

Erin Brockovich Explains The Flint Water Crisis

Lead contamination has become less of a widespread problem over the decades as it has been removed from products like paint and gasoline, but sadly the pipes that local and state governments are responsible for have not been updated to rid the water supply of toxic lead levels.

There is so much disinfo now that many are ditching digital altogether. Just as a tsunami of cable tv cattle chewed the cord in half and unplugged, so too is there now an increase in people yanking out their router cables like they’re starting a mower. There are so many critically worthwhile activities to do now instead of hopelessly, helplessly, consuming largely tainted information. Hopefully some will find the following info, of true value…

      Hello Angle#3,

Charlie here. I seen this story already on the Internet somewhere yesterday, and it’s not surprising the water is contaminated in heavy industrialized areas. No, not surprising at all.

Don’t know what else to tell you except get a very high-quality water filter. No, not the Brita types with coconut filters in them. You need distillers or reverse osmosis types. I believe they remove minerals out of the water so you have to re-mineralize your water to bring back taste, they say. Big headaches, big expense, but probably worth it.

Or you can buy water pre-filtered, but stay away from the big plastic jugs marked with #7 plastic, and have them deliver it to your house on a schedule. Also, you can order doughnuts at the same time. I’m working with a major water distributor to deliver doughnuts too.

Charlie (ever the marketeer on doughnuts)  <-

Good for her for not being hyperbolic and trying to face the facts

Flint will be waiting for help for a while because they are out of cash and have ultra-poor city management (Mayor Karen Weaver did survive her recall on the ballot on Nov. 7, but that tells you a little something, doesn’t it?). Drive south 1 hour to Ann Arbor (where U of M is located) and it is an entirely different story. Both have the same governor, state contracted municipal services, same geographic location, but very different tax bases. Money talks, and Flint doesn’t have any.

It’s not the main pipes to worry about, it’s all the over one hundred year old Street pipes coming off the mains and rot under your old roads and houses. I worry about the same problem in all western countries. If you think america would be bad imagine England! Rotting corpses mixed amongst modern plumbing. Paris catacomb water would be cleaner…
