Exclusive: US making plans for ‘bloody nose’ military attack on North Korea

America is drawing up plans for a “bloody nose” military attack on North Korea to stop its nuclear weapons programme, The Telegraph understands. 

The White House has “dramatically” stepped up preparation for a military solution in recent months amid fears diplomacy is not working, well-placed sources said.

One option is destroying a launch site before it is used by the regime for a new missile test. Stockpiles of weapons could also be targeted.

 The hope is that military force would show Kim Jong-un that America is “serious” about stopping further nuclear development and trigger negotiations. 

Three sources – two former US officials familiar with current thinking and a third figure in the administration – confirmed military options were being worked up.

Kim Jong-un has nuclear chief executed for test delays and tunnel collapse, according to reports

North Korea may have executed the official in charge of its nuclear test site facilities, in the second reported execution of a high-ranking party apparatchik in the space of a week.

Park In-young was the head of North Korea’s Bureau 131, a division of the ruling party’s Central Committee tasked with the supervision of military facilities such as the Punggye-ri underground nuclear test facility and the Sohae Satellite Launching Station.

Citing a defector, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported that he may have been punished over delays to the sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3. It was reportedly originally planned for the spring but was postponed due to delays in the tunnel construction.

“It seems he took the blame as the prolonged mining of the nuclear facility pushed back the test date to September when it was initially set for spring,” said the defector.

But the paper also speculated that his fate may have been sealed by the collapse of a tunnel in October, which allegedly killed around 200 people, but has been officially denied by Pyongyang.

South Korean paper, the Chosun Ilbo, also previously reported that the hydrogen bomb test, which provoked a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, caused several nearby buildings to collapse, including a school with more than 100 children in it. Casualties were feared but remain unconfirmed.

Geologists have since warned that the underground facility is now so unstable that a further test would risk a massive collapse and radioactive leaks.

If confirmed, Mr Park’s execution follows the disappearance of another top aide, General Hwang Pyong-so, who has allegedly also been killed by the regime in recent months.

Mr Hwang, once at the heart of the Pyongyang elite, has not been seen since October 13 and, according to reports from South Korean intelligence body, the NIS, was arrested and thrown out of the party along with this deputy, Kim Won-hong, for allegedly taking bribes.

“If Hwang was indeed kicked out of the Workers’ Party, it would practically mean the end of his political career, and possibly his life, though it is unknown whether or not he is still alive,” the South Korean JoongAng Ilbo reported.
