Russia Accuses United States And NATO of Breaching NPT?

Is the Non-Nuclear Proliferation Treaty violated by the West? A session of the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva was recently the stage of serious assertions made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“Everybody should understand that the US military are preparing the militaries of European states to use tactical nuclear weapons against Russia.”

They posit that this constitutes a violation of the treaty limiting nuclear proliferation, and warn that America’s actions undermine the treaty. Even if there were such a blatant loophole in the agreement, the strategy is sure to encourage similar actions from rival parties.

The United States has positioned approximately 200 B61 nuclear bombs in Europe. Participant allied nations such as Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey hold them in cooperation with NATO’s nuclear-sharing program. In Russia’s eyes, this is a very hostile tactic, but in reality, they are there specifically with Russia in mind as a potential enemy.

Presently, the B61 is undergoing upgrades to improve its adaptability in changing practical applications. America claims it must be done to counter Russia’s tactical nuclear assets. Like the opposite side of the same coin, Russia insists its arsenal is a necessary defense for NATO’s overwhelming superiority in terms of conventional arms.

We’ve been watching Russia and America or NATO square-off for a few years now on multiple fronts across the Eastern Hemisphere. Every conflict such as this seems to be one among hundreds of weights added to the figurative camel’s back. Which event will finally send us beyond the point of no return? We can’t help but wonder; Have we already seen it, and is the rest simply due process?
