Google Has A Huge Problem “Fake News” (Video)

Hi everybody, this is Jay. Google has predominantly shunned the political outrage (and grandstanding) directed at Facebook and Twitter about false information and trolling on their websites.

That could possibly be shifting.

This week, Media noted that Google was listing “Nazism” as the main ideology of the California Republican Party at the top of its search results in its “knowledge panel.” A Trump-supporting state senator in North Carolina also discovered that her knowledge panel exhibited a photo with the word “BIGOT” superimposed on it.

Republicans had presently been quarrelling that Big Tech was prejudiced towards them which is precisely how the Trump-loving duo Diamond and Silk turned witnesses at a House Judiciary hearing this past spring. It’s not shocking then that Republican leaders joyfully grandstanded all over Google on Thursday with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California informing Media that it was “disgraceful that the world’s largest search engine has labeled millions of California Republicans as Nazis.”

The issue in each of those cases seems to be that Google does not vet the data that it exhibits so prominently on its platform and utilizes third parties or not perfect automation. Google explained to Media that “sometimes people vandalize public information sources, like Wikipedia, which can impact the information that appears in search.”

But if we discovered 2 examples in 2 days, there are probably many more issues out there waiting to be discovered.

What Was of importance This Week

A Teenage Rom-Com, but with Nuclear Weapons

Donald Trump kissed and reconciled with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week and the summit involving the pair of them is back on for June 12th in Singapore. Trump directed an angry letter last week expressing that the summit was off but suggesting that he might be convinced to still hold it. Kim provided his own letter (privately through an messenger as opposed to Trump’s letter blasted out to the White House press list). The interpersonal theatre is amusing but also obscures the truth that these are two countries who have discussed utilizing nuclear weaponry.

Puerto Rico’s hurricane was much deadlier than publicised. The New England Journal of Medicine posted a Harvard study this week that projected at least 4,645 individuals died on account of Hurricane Maria and the rapid aftermath when the island lost nearly all of its electricity and the restoration was halting. This research comes after the official estimates for months had the number of deceased at 64. Puerto Ricans are basically American citizens but they also don’t have equal representation in Congress and have routinely been handled as second-class citizens. Hurricane Maria might be no different as the death toll seems to dwarf that of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina with just a fraction of the coverage. Read more here.

Trump pisses off….Canada

Canada was not very pleasant this week but, in fairness, the US started it. Trump boomed to epic proportions his trade war provocations this week when his administration mentioned they would not exempt Canada, Mexico, and the European Union from 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum, expressing the tariffs would be imposed on national security grounds. Trump might inevitably not go through with the move (he has backed down previously) but he provoked a strong response from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “These tariffs are totally unacceptable,” he stated in a speech Thursday evening. “That Canada could be considered a national security threat to the United States is inconceivable.”

What didn’t matter….

Kim Kardashian meeting Trump. The reality television stars met this week to talk about criminal justice change. Kardashian might have succeeded in persuading Trump to pardon Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old serving life in prison without parole after being found guilty in 1996 for running a multi-million dollar cocaine ring. But when it comes to considerable prison and sentencing change, Trump has continued to be the “law and order” first Republican that he campaigned as which is why considerable change continues to be bottlenecked in Congress.

“A 64-year-old Cleveland man is suing U.S. Customs and Border Protection after agents strip-searched him at an airport in October and took more than $58,000 in cash from him without charging him with any crime, according to a federal lawsuit filed this week in Ohio.

Customs agents seized the money through a process known as civil asset forfeiture, a law enforcement technique that allows authorities to take cash and property from people who are never convicted or even charged with a crime. The practice is widespread at the federal level.”
